Dear Mikey:
I was raised as a Methodist, spent much of my life as an atheist, and I am now an agnostic.
My real problem with all mainstream religion (so called “christian”, Hebrew, and Islam) is that we are all “of the book” – it’s the same God, but the people running things (who know better) are petty and bigoted, with no compassion or understanding of how open minded, compassionate, and generous religions should be.
My problem with government and the military (regarding religion) is that our Constitution specifically separates church and state; this was for good reason, as the Founding Fathers (most good Protestants) had been exposed to the bigotry and repression of theocracy. And read history to see how Catholics were crapped on in the early days of the Republic, let alone Jews and Moslems. Native Americans are yet a whole other level, but hey, they were “heathens”.
And if I was God I would be a little upset, not to mention how Jesus and Muhammed would view what the radical right wing nuts are doing.
I am relieved that people like yourself are also voices of reason in the wilderness.
Please contact me if I may be of assistance on the ground in Florida.
Respectfully,
(name and location withheld)
