Hello, whatever your name is. I hope this address isn’t a phony one of the type cowards are prone to use with this kind of tripe, because I truly want you to receive this message.

My name is Mike Farrell. That may not mean anything to you. If it doesn’t, let me add that I’m an actor who played on the television series M*A*S*H. I played Capt. “B.J.” Hunnicutt, Hawkeye’s buddy. I realize that may mean nothing to you either, but I’m hoping you may have accidentally stumbled across the show or my name at some point in your sad life. Because, you see, I do a lot of traveling and in doing so I meet a lot of people. That being the case, there is a possibility that our paths might cross at some point. I find that possibility titillating, in a way, because there are some thoughts I’d like to convey to you face to face. In case that doesn’t happen, let me preview them here.

First, I’d like you to know that I’m a member of the Board of Advisors of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. As such, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know many of the people involved in this work, know them and admire them for their commitment to protecting the right of freedom of thought and belief of the men and women in our armed forces.

Second, knowing and admiring these people as I do, I’m aware of the personal costs suffered by those most closely identified with the work of the MRFF. The costs are many, but those that cut the deepest are the ones that arise from the shrieking fear and belching ignorance of bigots like you. You, who suffer such a disgracefully low opinion of yourself and your beliefs that you’re forced to vomit your hatred at others for fear it will consume you, don’t understand it has already done so; it has shriveled the human spirit inside you to the point that you can’t allow yourself to recognize it in others.

Third, understand, if you can, that the cost these good people suffer when dealing with the likes of you is in large part the pain of recognizing that you are so wounded you spew ugliness empty of thought, absent consideration, and lacking any meaning; theirs is the pain of knowing that someone like you who has the capacity to be a human being would choose instead to so completely self-destruct.

So, if in fact our paths do cross one day, please find the courage to admit who you are so I can tell you to your face that you make me sick.
