Dear Bonnie,

Your book, You Can Be a Good Speller or a Hater, But …” is simultaneously wonderful and poignant.  I am both fascinated and repulsed by the hate directed at you and your family because of your courageous work with the MRFF.  I am fascinated by it, because the hate exposes a very dark scary part of my country.  Looking in on this hate is the equivalent of viewing intellectual road kill.  Naturally, I am repulsed by the ignorance and hate, as I hope others are too.

It is heartening to see the DoD quickly react positive ways, and take steps as listed in your Achievements to correct long tolerated abuses.  In time, the truth will win out, and the truth is religion can be very divisive, and smart leaders don’t let that happen.

I am also glad you didn’t include the hate mail I am certain you’ve received that is sexually explicit and violent.  Unfortunately, there are mentally ill people who are not part of the conversation about the appropriate role of religion and spirituality in the military, who would hijack that conversation for their misogynist purposes.

The value of a good book can range from instructive to transformational.  Time will tell of course, but in my opinion this one can be transformational, especially if read by your detractors.
