Subject: Standing Up

Message:

Sir: first thank you for taking my call earlier today. I also wanted to thank you and the MRFF for taking the public stand you all did regarding the Army “Mission For Both God and Country” recruiting poster for Special Forces. Which was displayed for much of the autumn in Phoenix, AZ. Just so you all know I am (number of years withheld) old have a spouse and (number of children withheld) kids and am an active duty U.S. Army (enlisted rank withheld) and recruiter. A (Protestant denomination withheld) and even a Republican voter. I have deployed (number of deployments withheld) times and have been decorated with (combat awards and decorations withheld). I have to tell you that many of us applauded when you published your news story about just how bad that poster was. One of us should have stood up sooner but we didn’t. You all did. Want to thank you all at the MRFF.

Sir: our U.S. Army builds its strength by bringing the best out of all of our soldiers irregardless of race gender birth origin sexual preference or faith choice. Recruiters supposed to know this especially. We are supposed to be a united combat team directed by our oath to the Constitution. And not “God” or “lack of a God” or anything else. We have many troops from many faith backgrounds in todays Army including more than ever before who would be classified as non-believers. That recruiting poster tore down the Army team. It did nothing to build and jack it up. It was divisive not unifying. It hurt and it messed up recruiting and did not help us. Th MRFF stood up and took the stand and the heat. My guys and me noticed.

Sir: many of us in (U.S. Army) Recruiting Command supports your guts in standing up to bring that poster down. USAREC HQ obviously agreed as they ordered it taken done so soon after your Editorial was published. I wanted to write to express my and my guys support. But wanted to wait a few days after reading of the “outrage” in so-called “conservative press” about you and the MRFF people. The writers of those news stories know nothing about what it take for us to recruit young people. And to become soldiers into todays all volunteer force. Many of the commentaters on these news stories are equally as out of touch. Many of the commentaters used foul words and abusive language about you and the MRFF. I and my guys apologize to you and the MRFF people for that ugliness. After looking at your website the last week we now know you are all used to that mean treatment. How you ever used to it? Frankly my spouse (name withheld) and I were shocked.

Mr. Weinstein, Sir: if you are ever in (city and state withheld) please let me know. I should still be stationed here for another (number of years withheld) years. The beer is on me and my guys. Please do not use my name or other stuff which identifies me in this e-mail. I want to live without looking over my shoulder out here. OK, Sir?
