Hi (name withheld),

Today, Mike Weinstein sent me a series of emails between you and him.  Though the content was not as bad as some of the foul writings that  Mike and Bonnie have endured over the years, this time there was a difference.  This time the author was a fellow grad!  A class of 1972 United States Air Force Academy graduate.  I can dismiss the brainwashed, the biased, and the ignorant, but I cannot dismiss you.

My name is Steve Haggerty and, like Mike, I am part of that bizarre class of 77.  He is one of my dearest friends and I consider him a brother.  Our crazy class, and especially our squadron, seemed to spawn that sort of closeness.  And that relationship has stayed strong despite the fact that I do not support him in his crusade.  (Though my opposition is more along the lines of a ‘right time and place’ argument.)  But it is a very big part of his life, and I absolutely support his right to fight this fight, even if I think he is wrong.  I am proud of him and the resolve he continually shows in the face of some very strong opposition.

But the heinous personal attacks, from educated people and from supposedly devout Christians, are the ones that I really don’t understand.  And I would never have expected a grad to sink so low.  William, I am embarrassed by your words.  Disagree if you want, oppose if you can, fight if you absolutely must, but do all with honor.

Your classmates, whether they agree with your position or not, would be ashamed.  You should be ashamed.

I hope that you can somehow find the courage to apologize to Mike for your words.

Steve Haggerty
