MRFF President/Founder Mikey Weinstein was contacted on January 21, 2016 by a U.S. Air Force Officer on behalf of himself and 7 fellow USAF Officers (all practicing Christians) regarding a highly inappropriate speech delivered at the first staff meeting called by their newly installed commanding officer.  This USAF Officer and MRFF client relayed the following opening statement made by the new commanding officer:

“Understand this. I am always a devoted Christian first and foremost. I was brought to Christ at the Air Force Academy and walk with him (sic) daily. I am a family man second and thirdly an Air Force Officer. I’m not saying that you need to be like me but I have found that specific order in my life to be the best path for success. And I emphasize the word specific. I want you all to know who I am and how I see my walk in this world. I want all of you to succeed as I have.”

This sectarian religious introduction was immediately followed by the Commander’s solicitation that all of his brand new subordinates bow their heads in a silent devotional prayer… which the Commander stated was henceforth to become the standard means and protocol of initiating all future staff meetings.

It should be noted that the Department of Defense Inspector General’s Office had previously determined this type of sectarian religious activity to be misconduct back in 2007 when USAF Major General Jack Catton Jr., a 1976 USAF Academy graduate and son of a 4-Star USAF General, delivered a nearly identical speech while in uniform and on duty in the Pentagon in a promotional video endorsing the so-called “Christian Embassy”.   Due to the remarkable similarity of comments made by the newly named Commander, it’s obvious he was reading from the same sectarian religious church ‘choir sheet’ as Maj. Gen. Catton.

One week after requesting MRFF’s assistance, another one of the 8 USAF officers informed Mikey that their commander had been severely reprimanded for his actions based on MRFF’s involvement.  This reprimand included a personal ‘apology’ to the commander’s subordinates that was laced with invective directed toward Mikey/MRFF and several pathetically nebulous complaints of ‘Christian’ persecution at the hands of Mikey/MRFF.

As a US military officer, I fought to uphold the values held within the U.S. Constitution and our Bill of Rights regarding religious freedom and separation of church and state. As a senior officer speaking to subordinate officers, there is implied coercion in Gen Catton’s and the above (Weinstein’s) statement and sentiments. And as a US senior military officer, I consider it to be an invasion of my rights and an offense to be preached to, implied or otherwise, or directed to follow ANY religion. My oath is to protect and defend The Constitution of the United States and I thank my god that I was born in the United States, away from religious persecution.
