WASHINGTON (VR) – The US Supreme Court has upheld the tradition of opening public meetings with prayer. Five of the nine justices, who also happen to be Roman Catholic, voted in favor of allowing Christian prayer at the start of public meetings, saying prayer is unconstitutional only if it attempts to intimidate, coerce or convert nonbelievers. A Jewish and atheist residents of the town of Greece, New York brought forth their lawsuit on the grounds that the prayers made them uncomfortable.

However, Justice Anthony Kennedy, wrote “offense…does not equate to coercion.”

Mikey Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, believes it’s a sad day for religious liberty in the U.S.

“Lady Liberty is crying today,” he said. “This is a tragedy and a travesty. I look at the Supreme Court, and I would like to remind the five Catholic men who voted for this decision that they are Catholics, and the people that are rejoicing the most right now, are organizations…that often don’t even view Catholics as being true members of the Christian sisterhood and brotherhood.”
