I think the letter U.S. Congressmen Garcia, Green, Pfluger and Davidson sent to the Academy Superintendent is priceless. Here is my suggestion for how USMMA Superintendent Nunan might wish to start her letter of response:

    Dear Honorable Representatives,

Were you AWOL when your West Point, Annapolis and Air Force Academy classes taught who calls the shots at a military base? What part of “command structure” do you not understand? Let me help you: I call the shots here. Lest you think you should go over my head, let me remind you that I work for MARAD and DOT, including honorable Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips and Secretary Peter Buttigieg. Do you seriously think they have not already approved my actions?

But if this does not satisfy you, then sure, let’s talk law. You want to talk about Van Orden v. Perry and the Bladensburg Peace Cross decision, both civilian First Amendment decisions, right? Sirs, this is about First Amendment law and the military. Meaning: Would you please get back to me when you have reviewed the precedent pertaining to the military? Because at present, even if I had just stood 48 non-stop hours of watch on the North Atlantic in winter (which I have, by the way), I could out-debate all four of you on this issue. …
