LAST CHANCE FOR 2007
FULLY TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, MRFF NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT MORE THAN EVER

As constant assaults on our Constitution continue, so do the daily revelations of pervasive infiltration by Christian fundamentalists within the highest ranks of our military.

"Crusader" ideology has melded with the most powerful war machine in history, the risk to our nation and the world has never been greater. This is no exaggeration.

THE GOOD FIGHT

Dispatches from opposite sides of the debate
about religion in the workplace.

At the beginning of our first phone conversation, Mikey Weinstein asks me if I'm Jewish. At the end of our first e-mail exchange, Angie Tracey tells me to have a blessed evening. Weinstein has spent the past four years fighting what he calls a war against Christian proselytizing through the chain of command in the military; Tracey founded the first officially recognized Christian federal employee association in the nation.

THE ANTI-CRUSADER

News: Mikey Weinstein fights those who push evangelical Christianity in the military—and draws
decidedly unchristian responses.

At Mikey Weinstein's home in the suburbs of Albuquerque, the picture window in the living room has been twice shot out. Sometimes Weinstein opens his front door to find dead animals on his porch, feces smeared on his walls, or slashes in his tires. Men have called to threaten his daughter, women to chant rhymes about shooting him in the head, small children to inform him that he will burn in hell. To his critics, he says, "Take a number, pack a picnic lunch, and stand in line." He's not going anywhere, and neither is his 5'6" ex-Marine security guard, Shorty.

MIKEY WEINSTEIN:
JESUS AND THE GENERALS

It's "Onward, Christian Soldiers!" as the Pentagon is comandeered by the Military-Evangelical Complex.

Warning: This interview contains strong language.

Air Force Academy graduate Mikey Weinstein was born into a military family that has served from World War I to Iraq.  For three years the Republican was a Reagan White House lawyer and eventually the Iran-Contra investigation’s committee management officer.  Weinstein was also Ross Perot’s general counsel.  Despite his conservative background, in 2006 Weinstein established the nonprofit Military Religious Freedom Foundation, and he coauthored 2007’s With God on Our Side and appeared in the documentary Constantine’s Sword.  HUSTLER explores why this thorn in the Pentagon’s side warns of “an unbelievable fusing of our Defense Department with Christian dominionist dogma.”

AN INTERFAITH VIEW:
ONWARD, CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS?

When Michael "Mikey" Weinstein went to the Air Force Academy in the 1970s, he was harassed and badly beaten for being Jewish. But over the years, things seemed to get better for Jews in the American military — there was dialogue with Christians, where before there’d been confrontation. So it was especially traumatic when Weinstein was told in 2004 by his son, Curtis, who was then a cadet at the Air Force Academy, that non-Christians were again being targeted. This time the goal wasn’t only to harass them. Now the goal was forced conversion to Christianity.

SAVING OUR TROOPS

News: Evangelical singer Eric Horner is the darling of
the American military, and the bane of
non-Christian soldiers everywhere.

Early this month, Eric Horner, a Christian country-western singer, was preparing for a concert in North Carolina’s Outer Banks when he received a phone call from the United States military. President George W. Bush had just announced that he would deliver a speech to graduating Army recruits at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in three days; the military wanted to know if Horner could play the gig.

DIVINELY INSPIRED CARE
PACKAGES FOR THE TROOPS

When I was a Marine company commander in South Vietnam in 1967, my unit regularly received "care" packages addressed to "Any soldier, sailor, airman or Marine." The packages contained such items as disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, Lifesavers, factory-packaged snack items and paperback novels. The care packages were normally prepared by various civic and veterans' organizations and if approved by the Department of Defense they were eligible for expedited shipping overseas. The care packages were always appreciated by those in uniform.

Greetings MRFF Supporters!

Quite a Year!

Well gang, a remarkable year in our young history is closing out, and we are busier than ever. Our media exposure has never been better, as we were among the lead stories in Mother Jones, Government Executive, and Hustler. We have never been in more demand for speaking events, as I am receiving regular speaking requests from organizations nationwide. Finally, our legal cases have never been stronger, as we align brave plaintiffs who are willing to make the military defend its heinous actions in court. With your continued support, we will create a legal precedent that upholds the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state in our armed forces.

We have made a concerted effort not to overtly appeal for donations in our regular newsletters. Instead, we wanted to keep you informed of the great work we are doing and the difference we are making together at MRFF. However, as we close out the year and prepare to go into court and grow our organization, our financial needs are significant. We simply cannot go forward without your support, and I hope you will take the time this holiday season to make a fully tax-deductible contribution to our great work. Folks, we are the only ones fighting this fight. Please help us continue to battle!

Your Eternal Ally,
Mikey
