With McHugh at the Helm,
Christian Fundamentalist Permeation
of the Army Likely to Continue

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

By Chris Rodda

While the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) is extremely pleased by the announcement that President Obama is replacing Army Secretary Pete Geren, a man who is clearly among those who view the current wars as a religious struggle, we have grave concerns about nominee John McHugh, whose record in Congress indicates that he is no friend of the protections guaranteed by the First Amendment, a standpoint that could have serious ramifications with respect to the already crumbled wall between religion and the military, and further weaken the right of our soldiers to be free from government sanctioned religious coercion and discrimination.

War room is no place for Bible study

Monday, May 25, 2009

By James Carroll

THAT Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld supplied President Bush with Bible-laced Pentagon intelligence briefings might only seem like more Bush-era loopiness, but wait a minute. The deeper, and still current, question is: What in heaven (or, what the hell) is going on inside the US military?

Religion and the military and
more - for want of a better title

Sometimes one encounters a piece of writing which cannot be easily sampled. That is, it is so complete, so tightly woven together, that offering a couple of paragraphs to illustrate its cogency does it weak if any justice.

And sometimes a piece of writing is by an author almost uniquely suited to be offering commentary on the subject it addresses.

I am going to suggest to you that in today's Boston Globe you can encounter a piece of writing that cannot be easily sampled, by an author uniquely qualified to offer such remarks. It is by James Carroll, and it is entitled War Room is no place for Bible Study.

The religious assault
on America's military

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

By Ron Bohr

A campaign is being waged by religious extremists to undermine the commitment of America's military to defending our country and our constitution, converting it to a recruiting camp for fundamentalist/
evangelical sectarians.

Among military chaplains, fundamentalism is taking hold

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Sommerville Photo[Episcopal News Service] As an Episcopal priest who is also a retired member of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps, I am prompted to write after reading a very disturbing article in the May edition of Harper's magazine: "Jesus Killed Mohammed: The Crusade for a Christian Military."

In the story, author Jeff Sharlet writes that a voluntary association called the Officer's Christian Fellowship (OCF) is aggressive and coordinated in furthering its evangelical agenda. The story states that several high ranking officers have inappropriately used Pentagon facilities and other national symbols for their Christian propaganda in the media and that they have been challenged legally and successfully.

Afghanistan: Bible Blitzkrieg

John 3:16, from the Bible
A fundamentalist Christian movement within the US military seeks to convert locals to the detriment of US strategy in Afghanistan, Jody Ray Bennett writes for ISN Security Watch.

By Jody Ray Bennett for ISN Security Watch

As if the Obama administration needed more problems with regard to Afghanistan, it can now add another to the growing list of concerns challenging American strategy in the 'graveyard of empires': Christian fundamentalists. This time, at least, the problem has nothing to do with “the enemy” - Taliban insurgents, covert Iranian influence or otherwise - as much as it has to do with the American forces itself. Indeed, the latest concern has everything to do with a seemingly opaque yet ubiquitous religious culture within US forces that has enabled a specific fundamentalist Christian movement to turn its sights on the Afghan public.

Dear Mr. Foxman-

California Council of Churches IMPACT has been a long-time ally of ADL. For many years I have worked with many wonderful California and national ADL people around our mutual interest in stopping hate crimes, and we continue to ally on these issues and support for religious freedom. Therefore I write to ask you to engage with us on yet another such concern.

Major Jeff Strueker is a bit of a celebrity among chaplains. As an enlisted soldier, Strueker was in the 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, and was portrayed in the movie "Black Hawk Down." He later became a chaplain, and is currently with the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia. Chaplain Strueker's personal website promoting his speaking appearances and books is full of his publicity photos, in uniform, which are frequently used by churches where he is scheduled to speak.

In this video produced by his ecclesiastical endorsing agency, the North American Mission Board, Chaplain Strueker explains his evangelizing tactics while assigned to the Army Ranger School, saying that his "goal has been to meet them when they're at their absolute worst -- when they're coldest, and the most tired, and the most hungry that they're gonna be because the more difficult the circumstances, the more receptive the average person becomes to issues of faith and spiritual matters," and how being cut off from the outside world while in training means that they can be "confronted with the gospel for the first time with no distractions."

MRFF has received a number of reports of the promotion of a program called "The Truth Project" (www.thetruthproject.org) on various military bases, with posters for the program being hung in unavoidable places like mess halls, and flyers and announcements being emailed to the troops. Unlike other evangelizing programs, "The Truth Project," created by Focus on the Family, is not aimed at non-Christians, but at the Christians who aren't the "right kind" of Christians. The program's goal is to transform these "other" Christians into fundamentalists by promoting the fundamentalist "biblical worldview," a view that, according to Focus on the Family, only 9 percent of professing Christians have. The promotion of programs like this, whose aim to impose the views of the fundamentalist minority on the non-fundamentlist Christians in the military, both Protestant and Catholic, might help to explain why 96% of the service members who contact MRFF for assistance are Christians themselves -- just not the "right kind" of Christians for today's military.

This was a PowerPoint flyer emailed to one of the service members who reported the military's promotion of this program to MRFF.

The constitutional violations occurring in our military are so numerous and widespread that we can't possibly find all of them ourselves. Message From
Mikey Weinstein
MRFF President

Mikey Weinstein

Greetings MRFF supporters!

First, I’d like to point out the whopping news that has come out in the last month that completely validates every single day and dollar that MRFF has dedicated to this most vital fight: GQ’s shocking revelation that former defense secretary Rumsfeld provided top-secret cover sheets to President Bush featuring biblical quotes, and the revelation that President Bush justified the Iraq War with biblical prophesy in a conversation with Jacques Chirac, former President of France.

The aforementioned also validates the extreme importance of reaching our goal through our "Help Build The Wall" call to action campaign. I appeal to you, please become a Spartan and get $300 in donations by August 1st. When thought of as $10 from 30 people, this is an easy to accomplish.

In addition, on May 29th we held our prestigious annual Thomas Jefferson Award Luncheon in Albuquerque, where four prominent and much deserving individuals were recognized by MRFF for their ongoing and selfless efforts in promoting religious freedom in the United States military.

Your Eternal Ally,
Mikey
