By Ron Cassie On March 22, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan attended Palm Sunday services at Thurmont's Trinity United Church of Christ. A plaque on the pew where Eisenhower sat commemorates the visit, pastor Les Sims said. |
Lt. Carey H. Cash is pastor at the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David, as reported by Time magazine this week. Cash is the great-nephew of country singing legend Johnny Cash and author of the book, “A Table in the Presence: The Dramatic Account of How a U.S. Marine Battalion Experienced God’s Presence Amidst the Chaos of War in Iraq.” |

Of all the emails we receive on a daily basis, there is no more prolific subject than religion. While MOAA’s efforts to improve the quality of life for every member of the military, we do not get involved on the topic of faith. The Battle of the Bilge will only run email or web page analysis on religious topics when there is a direct military link, such as the bible burning incident in Afghanistan or the restrictions on speaking in uniform at faith based events. But for every topic that does involve the military, we receive dozens that do not. One of the most frequent names that appear in email forwards, in both scorn and praise, is Michael Weinstein of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Battle of the Bilge tracked down Mikey, as he asked to be called, and had a long night time chat about the foundation, the troubles facing the military and his mission, which has turned his life upside down.

A June 23, 2009 report from Al Jazeera (English) by Josh Rushing, "Fault Lines - Religion in the Military", expertly covers a topic the US media has been reluctant to address: an aggressive effort, often abusive, coercive and even illegal, to advance a heavily sectarian, supremacist form of Christianity in the United States military.

As I wrote back in May, the antics of disgraced former Navy chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt, and his retaliation against the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) and Americans United for Separation of Church and State, after the two organizations issued a joint letter to the Chief of Naval Operations requesting an investigation of his use of his image in uniform to solicit funds for political causes, led MRFF to take a closer look at Klingenschmitt's endorser, the Chaplaincy of Full Gospel Churches (CFGC) and its leader, retired Army colonel Jim Ammerman. What we found was astounding, and led to a decision by MRFF to formally demand that Ammerman, whose agency provides the ecclesiastical endorsements required by the Department of Defense for over 270 military chaplains and chaplain candidates, be stripped of the authority granted to him and his organization by the DoD to endorse military chaplains.

Newsweek magazine reported this week that a civil rights watchdog group is accusing the military of using its presence in Muslim countries to spread Christianity among the population, a “serious” violation of military protocol. What implications are there for those people who suddenly see themselves staring at the cover of a Christian Bible and are pressured into believing in something they don’t? What actions should the military take, both at the command level and rank-and-file, to prevent this from happening?
Standing for Separation of Church and State in the Military

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation was formed to address issues relating to proselytism (which is forbidden) in the U.S. military. Over the last few years, you may have read about the founder, Mikey Weinstein, in his battle over aggressive evangelism in the Air Force Academy. He is an alumnus of the Academy, himself – and was absolutely appalled by the anti-Semitic treatment his son was receiving there from evangelical Christians. That offensive treatment was not limited to Jews only – it was affecting everyone who was not an adherent of that particular, aggressive brand of evangelical Christianity.

For those not familiar with the process of becoming a military chaplain, here is some background information. The Armed Forces Chaplain Board makes recommendations via certified ‘Endorsing Agencies’ to the Secretary of Defense on a variety of chaplain issues. There are currently nine administrating endorsing agencies and approximately another 187 endorsing agencies. The full list of agencies can be found here. The purpose of the AFCB is listed on their website here as:

Marine Staff Sergeant Justin Harding, a disciple of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, has appeared twice -- both times in uniform -- on a religious program called "The Defining Moment." Here are some clips from his second appearance on the program, during which he discussed his faith, his devotion to Rev. Moon, and his thoughts about becoming a chaplain. He also told a nice little story about how he would use his rank to make his subordinates get in formation and order them to sound off, shouting "Reverend Moon is the Messiah."

The constitutional violations occurring in our military are so numerous and widespread that we can't possibly find all of them ourselves. MRFF counts on its supporters and volunteers -- the indispensable "eyes and ears" who alert us to everything from the most egregious of constitutional violations to articles we might be interested in. So, keep the emails coming, and never think that anything is too insignificant or assume that we might already know about it. You never know -- you might have stumbled into the next bombshell of a story and not even realize it.

Message From
Mikey Weinstein
MRFF President

Greetings MRFF supporters!
Amazing! Our constant presence and pressure just led to the Pentagon's denial of an Air Force flyover of a blatantly Christian event in Idaho for the first time in 42 years! You'll find extensive coverage of this breakthrough in this very newsletter.
It's been another groundbreaking month of mass media coverage for us here at MRFF. As a result of MRFF's constant vigilance, we were extremely pleased to have been featured on a homepage story by Newsweek.com, which was also covered by MSNBC.com. In addition, our crack Senior Research Director, Chris Rodda, spoke on behalf of MRFF for Faultlines, one of Al Jazeera's prominent investigative programs.
In June, we launched our vital call to action fundraising campaign, Help Build The Wall. We are in dire straits at MRFF, and without your immediate assistance we won't survive! We are looking for motivated individuals to get at least $300 in donations from anyone and everyone they are in contact with. Please see the featured section at the top of this newsletter for more information and to participate!
Finally, as you know, we recently sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, demanding the immediate revocation of CFGC's ecclesiastical endorsing authority. This letter was also sent to President Obama, the Secretaries of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chairmen of the U.S. House and Senate Armed Services Committees, and more. You will see much more coverage of this letter in this newsletter, as well as the June 26th edition of our Weekly Watch.
Your Eternal Ally,
Mikey
