Army Officer Who Said Blacks Were
Better Off as Slaves Promoted with
Obama's Blessing

Thursday, September 10, 2009

By Chris Rodda

"The President of the United States has reposed special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of the following officers," says the order promoting Army Lieutenant Colonel Robert G. Young to the rank of full colonel.

Now, the president can't be expected to personally vet every military officer who is up for promotion, and, for all but those in the highest ranks, would obviously just rely on the recommendations of the superiors of officers on the promotions lists, but I have to wonder how the president would feel about having rubber stamped the promotion of an officer who said that blacks were better off as slaves.

MRFF Outs Biased
Air Force Investigator

September 3, 2009

By: Ed Brayton

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation got its start after Mikey Weinstein, its founder, saw his children get discriminated against and mistreated while attending the Air Force Academy. In 2005, he demanded an investigation into proselytizing and religious coercion at the academy and the Air Force issued a report that acknowledged some problems but generally played down the seriousness of those problems.

A separate investigation was done into allegations against the commandant of the Academy, Brig. General Johnny Weida. The Pentagon sent out an investigator to look at those allegations, Col. Donald Higgins, who cleared Weida of all seven charges. And Higgins, it turns out, is quite a head case and he's been doing some things that clearly call his objectivity into question.

Bribing “Conversion”
in a Time of War…
Is There Anything
Much Lower Than That?

Tuesday, August 31, 2009

By: Leah Burton

In the process of transitioning web sites, I want to start a new series that will be ongoing on the new site. As I have said, we will be departing the Palin port and moving into broader scopes. This will sometimes require ongoing ties back to Queen Esther – as in today’s post about the antics of Franklin Graham and his neat lil company, “Samaritan’s Purse”. Referring back to her is inevitable because they did actually choose her (as unbelievable as that still remains to my rational mind), one year ago today.

My partner Alex (aka ‘dogemporer’), in the upcoming book has done extensive research and writing over the years on dominionism and religious extremism. A great deal of her “diaries” as she calls them are spread across many web sites in the blogosphere…but I am going to start re-posting portions of them with links to her entire articles on the new blog site, “godsownparty”, in an effort to bring them into one place. Her work is invaluable.

Violation on Video

Recently, MRFF has received a number of emails about the distribution to military personnel of a product called the "BibleStick," a digital audio player containing an audio version of the New Testament. There is, of course, no problem with chaplains giving this product to troops who request it, but there certainly is a problem with a member of the military doing a promotional video for the product in uniform.

This video, starring Navy chaplain LCDR Steve Sexton, appears on the website of Faith Comes By Hearing (FCBH), the organization that distributes the BibleSticks. FCBH, whose partner in this project is Campus Crusade for Christ's Military Ministry, uses this video of LCDR Sexton on a page soliciting donations for its "Military Outreach."

Violation on Video

This month's photo was forwarded to MRFF by our friend Ed Brayton, who runs the blog Dispatches from the Culture Wars and hosts the radio show Declaring Independence. Ed often covers MRFF stories on his blog, and, following one of these stories, was emailed by an officer serving in Iraq.

MRFF has a pretty big collection of military Bibles and Christian books that are inappropriately endorsed by the military, but most of these endorsements have come from a specific unit or individual, either through the use of a unit's emblem or a written endorsement from a commander. Others are privately produced Bibles that carry the emblems of the military branches, which may or may not have been used with the permission of the military.

The photo sent to Ed, however, raises this issue to a whole new level. This is a military Bible endorsed not just by a unit or individual commander, but officially endorsed by the Multi-National Corps - Iraq and I Corps, both of whose logos are printed on its cover. The concerns about this endorsement go beyond its evidence of the promotion of Christianity at the highest levels of the military. Of equal concern is that having these officially endorsed Bibles floating around Iraq sends a message that we are a Christian military on a crusade, and can be used for propaganda purposes.

Here are the email and photo received by Ed:

Hi Ed,

I am another officer in our Christian military. I am currently serving in Baghdad and came across your post. I couldn't agree more with what was said. It's a sad state that I never expected when I signed up, and is one of the factors that has contributed to my decision to leave the military next May when my commitment runs out.

I attached a picture of the Bibles that they are distributing here. They feature the logos for Multi-National Corps - Iraq (MNC-I), the 3-star command that oversees all of the operational aspects of the war, and I Corps, the corps from Fort Lewis, WA that fills most of the seats of MNC-I. When the chaplain came by to pass these out I asked if I Corps had Torahs or Qur'ans sporting the MNC-I and I Corps logos, or if they only endorsed the Bible. He laughed it off and left. I don't see how these can be viewed as anything but a direct endorsement of Christianity by our military.

Feel free to use the picture or anything that I just said however you would like. I just ask that you don't publicly identify me.

Thanks for what you do,

The constitutional violations occurring in our military are so numerous and widespread that we can't possibly find all of them ourselves. MRFF counts on its supporters and volunteers -- the indispensable "eyes and ears" who alert us to everything from the most egregious of constitutional violations to articles we might be interested in.

So, keep the emails coming, and never think that anything is too insignificant or assume that we might already know about it. You never know -- you might have stumbled into the next bombshell of a story and not even realize it.

MRFF President

Mikey Weinstein

Greetings MRFF supporters!

Thanks to your support MRFF continues its duty of protecting the rights of those who serve our nation.

However, we will be unable to fulfill that duty without an ongoing outpouring of generous financial support from you, our valued supporters. To this end, we have crafted an exciting new fundraiser called "Bowling For The Troops."

At these Bowling For The Troops Bowl-A-Thons, groups of interested local individuals will attain sponsors that pledge donations - either on a per-pin basis, or as a flat rate donation.

We are currently featuring upcoming bowling events in Los Angeles on September 22nd, and in Albuquerque on October 10th.

In Los Angeles, the special celebrity guest is Ed Asner, winner of seven Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes. In Albuquerque, the special celebrity guest bowlers are retired Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson (retired), and his wife, Valerie Plame Wilson. Additionally, I will be in attendance at both events.

If you are near one of those areas, please consider participating as a bowler. If you are not in the area, or cannot attend, please make a donation to support our bowling events. Click here for more information, to participate, or to donate.

With your continued support we will remain ever vigilant in our task. As our costs rise to maintain our presence in the courts and in the media, our struggle to survive grows ever more difficult. Please lend a helping hand.

Your Eternal Ally,
Mikey
