Court dismisses atheist's lawsuit
regarding Fort Riley

Thursday January 7th, 2010

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A federal judge in Kansas dismissed a lawsuit Thursday by an atheist soldier who claimed his rights were violated because he had to attend events where prayers were said while stationed at Fort Riley.

U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil ruled Army Spc. Dustin Chalker failed to exhaust all other alternatives before he and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation sued the Department of Defense in 2008.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation said Chalker's case reflected a pattern of religious intolerance and proselytizing by members of the armed forces. Mikey Weinstein, president of the Albuquerque, N.M., foundation, said an appeal of the ruling would be filed with the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver.

America's Pact With Satan

Thursday, January 14, 2010

By Frank Schaeffer

Frank Schaeffer is a member of the MRFF Advisory Board

It's clear that America's Founding Fathers must have made a pact with the Devil. How else to explain the curse America is so obviously under today? I want to go even farther than Pat Robertson and tell it like it really is!

(Disclosure: back in the 1970s and 80s before I quit the evangelical right, I was on the 700 Club with Pat 6 times, given my late father Francis Schaeffer was a founder of the religious right).

What else besides a punishment for a satanic pact could explain the following?

Defenders of Christ and War

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

By Mike Leon

Some serving in the U.S. military seeing themselves on a holy mission from a Christian God are up to the task a little too enthusiastically for Americans who want their country officially secular and substantively humanistic. Concerns about a growing dominionist Christian movement seeking to control the U.S. military academies and foreign policy persist as America continues its two or three wars in what many fundamentalist American Christians consider a holy battle against Islam. [And hey chickenhawks: If you are so hot for war, the least you could do is make damn sure the people who fight get taken care of after you have used them.]

This really hit a nerve with me. My mother, a strong but almost shy person, once staged her own small protest in church. We went every Sunday to our southern Virginia Episcopal church. This was pretty radical the late 1950s, before "protests" became THE THING to do. Two of the hymns we sang were "Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus" and "Onward Christian Soldiers." When one of these appeared in the bulletin, Mother would refuse to sing, but would stand with her mouth in a grim, straight line through all the verses. One Sunday after service, the minister asked her why she wasn't singing that morning. She replied, "I have always been told that Jesus was a man of peace. I do not believe that he would condone sending out men to fight in His name, and I have no intention of encouraging such a thing." She died eight years ago, but she would be so pleased that there are people willing to "protest" this outrage.

Latest religious messages:

Aggressive Christianity:

(1) The Rev. Marc Grizzard, pastor of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., staged an October book-burning of “Satan’s” literature, including works by Mother Teresa and the Rev. Billy Graham and any Bible besides the King James version.

(2) In October, Mikey Weinstein, a former military lawyer who served in the Reagan White House, filed a lawsuit against Gordon Klingenschmitt, head of a Dallas chaplains’ association, to stop Klingenschmitt from publicly reciting Bible verses implying a smiting of Weinstein, along with Weinstein’s family and descendants for 10 generations. Said Klingenschmitt: “I never prayed for anyone’s death. All I did was quote the Scriptures.”

Krusaders for Khrist…This is THEIR
Holy War, Not America’s

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

By Leah Burton

In the spirit of the New Year and my goal to make a clear message available…I am no longer going to use the confusing small ‘c’ to spell ‘c’hristian when I am referring to heretical Christian Dominionists. Too many were getting snagged up on whether I am anti-Christian because of the overt subtleness of that distinction.

So I am now going to consistently use a clearer spelling – “Khristian”. And if this continues to cause confusion? Well, those folks will just have to move along. I make it abundantly obvious in repeated phraseology that I am NOT anti-Christian. So let me re-phrase this more clearly…I AM anti-Khristian!

Army Chaplaincy Forcing Chaplains to Attend Conservative Presbyterian Seminary

“…a clear violation of the chaplains',
forced to attend, free-exercise rights.”

January 6, 2010

Dear Mikey,

I am writing to ask you and your organization to look into a current Army Chaplaincy practice. The Army sends a selection of chaplains through a program called Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) each year. This is a non-sectarian method of training chaplains to work in institutional environments. While the graduates primarily fill hospital roles, they are also used for correctional facilities. It is program validated by a civilian organization and can be completed by people from all faith backgrounds without violation of conscience. I commend the Army for having such a professionally esteemed program in place to train its chaplains who will be serving America's servicemen in their most vulnerable moments of life. The problem comes in with the Army's addition to the basic CPE program. With no requirement (or even recommendation) from the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the Army Chaplaincy has taken it upon itself to add a Doctor of Ministry degree requirement. This professional doctorate could be of great use to chaplains if they had any say in the program, school attended, or doctrine taught.

This is so alarming. Main Line Presbyterians will be as shocked as anyone else by this. I do fear a military coup in this country, and perhaps Obama does as well. Reason for not tackling this. I wish that ALL progressive religionists would flood the media with protests. Most people do not know about it and I suppose that if they are good Christians would not be as upset as the rest of us. kas p.s.I am forwarding this to some of my progressive Christian friends.

January 5, 2010

Dear MRFF,

I Linked to you from Google search on House Resolutions and found one respecting the establishment of Christianity. Founding Fathers might have been Christians but they were intelligent enough to respect the idea that people of other faiths would want to live in the union of the United States.

What are you doing to expose those Senators and Congressmen who violate the separation of church and state? Congress shall make no law respecting ( in respect to, in regard to; which gives governmental "respect" toward ) the establishment ( noun: the existence of; verb: toward fostering an establishment of ) religion.

Throughout the history of the world, violation of this principle has resulted in untold persecution and suffering for christians, jews , protestants ( for protestants in Spain when it became Catholic )

Please tell me that your organization is confronting these violators of our Constitution. Call it what it is.

Congress thinks that it can make any law that it chooses. It Can Not make a law that is unconstitutional.

Furthermore, anyone who attempts to make a such an unconstitutional law should be brought up on Charges of violating our Constitutional Rights, "our Civil Rights". They should not be elected for another term.

Please advise,
Charles

Subject: Proselytization Efforts at Kirtland AFB

Mikey,

I'm an idiot for not reporting this to you before. The facts just didn't click in my head as being an issue you'd be concerned with. Here are the relevant facts:

I have a friend who is a contracting officer on Kirtland AFB. Her husband was a (rank withheld). He was put in correctional confinement at Kirtland AFB in (recent month and year withheld). During his confinement, a contingent of Air Force personnel, specifically NOT chaplains, came to the correctional facility at Kirtland to provide religious teaching. Among them was a former coworker, Maj (at the time), now Lt Col. (name withheld). He did hold weekly Bible studies, using converence rooms on the West Side of Kirtland. While that was mostly harmless, from my perspective, adding an element of authority to religious proselytization efforts to those already afoul with the system seems to not only cross the line, but demonstrate complete disregard for its existence.

Thanks,
(name withheld), USAF Officer's Rank Withheld, USAF

Also, me update: graduated from (name of military course withheld) school off to (military installation name withheld) AFB soon. That looks like a low threat area, but let me know if you need intel there or at any other base as I've got several like-minded individuals placed across the Air Force.

Subject: Perception of Jews

Jews are reviled the world over. Only naive, idealistic whites haves foolishly abetted the Zionist jews, and they are starting to get over their guilt trip and are waking up to the snake that is in their bed. Do you dare trade quotes by famous people on the jew?

Subject: Franklin on the jew

The following is a note from MRFF's Research Department regarding the above email:

This is a complete fake, made up in the 1930s, that has now resurfaced on neo-Nazi websites. It was first published in 1934 by William Dudley Pelley, a Hitler supporter who started an anti-Semitic extremist group here in America called the Silver Legion, and then ran for president in 1936 as the candidate for the Christian Party. His extremist activities were eventually considered so dangerous to America that he was actually charged with treason and sedition in 1942, and spent 15 years in prison.

The journal of Charles Pinckney, if it ever even existed, has never been found. James Madison's extremely detailed records of the Constitutional Convention contain absolutely no record of anything even remotely like this from Franklin, and neither do the notes taken by any of the other delegates that actually do exist.

Another big tip off that it's a fake is that there are words and terms in it that weren't even in use in Franklin's day, the most obvious of which is the word "homeland." Nobody in the 1780s would have referred to a Jewish "homeland." That's a 20th century term.

Those who are trying to pass this garbage off as genuine might at least want to get the spelling of Charles Pinckney's name right, which, you'll notice, they misspelled "Pickney."

Message From

MRFF President

Mikey Weinstein

Greetings MRFF supporters!

As we enter 2010, I first want to thank every single one of our many supporters for their generous donations during our Year End Appeal. No matter the size of the donation, I want you to know just how appreciative we are of your support, and just how important your donations are to the continued existence and efficacy of MRFF.

Additionally, I would like to specifically thank the anonymous donor who generously offered to match $5,000 in donations made during our Year End Appeal.

The holiday season always seems to bring out especially furtile discoveries of unconstitutional religious incursions in the U.S. military, and this last year was certainly no exception. Our intrepid research department, headed by MRFF Senior Research Director Chris Rodda, continues to excel at digging up Constitutional violations in our armed forces.

Be sure to keep your eyes out for yet another near-term shocking breaking news story initiated by MRFF discoveries!

Again, all of us at MRFF thank you for your support, and your continued fully tax-deductible donations are always appreciated and always needed.

Your Eternal Ally,
Mikey
