Book Review: To the Far Right Christian Hater. . .

Sunday, December 7, 2014

"So we're not against religion, in fact if anything we are pro religion. More specifically, we are 'pro-choice' when it comes to faith or no-faith. We’re concerned about a specific pattern of intimidation and strong arm tactics associated most often with fundamentalist or 'dominionist' Christianity which simply violates the Constitutional Rights of American service members, and in almost all cases, these tactics are seriously undermining the morale, discipline, the careers and could even threaten the safety of our troops."

- Author and MRFF co-founder Bonnie Weinstein

There is a growing rage in this country and we're not talking about communities or minorities angry over a miscarriage of justice. This rage is genuinely felt, but it is fabricated, fully manufactured, and fueled by a network of traditional and new media, almost wholly on the right. It is a rage both clumsy and ruthless, lashing out at anyone and everyone put before it. Over the last 10 years, Bonnie Weinstein and her husband, Mikey, of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation have been square in the cross-hairs.

Bonnie is an unlikely activist. She is a middle-class mother of three, and grandmother of one, pursuing the American dream with a deep respect for all those things that make this country great. Her husband Mikey, her two sons, her daughter-in-law, son-in law and brother in-law are all Air Force Academy graduates. Her father-in-law is an Annapolis grad. But these days she is the target of vandalism, endless hatred, email and snail mails frothing with fury, some with detailed threats of death and torture worthy of Hannibal Lector.

I had a chance to chat with her this week about how this all started, and her new book on the subject of hate. As she described a few of her experiences, her hands would occasionally shake and her voice would crack. But her resolve burns through the virtual bulls-eye haters have painted across her chest. Join me below to see what started this madness and how she neatly turned the tables on the haters.

What Would Jesus Write?

December 2014

Selected Article Excerpt

... Mikey [Weinstein] exposed an entrenched movement of extreme rightwing Christians, many of whom had extraordinary privileges within the Pentagon, and were systemically using the military's command structure to proselytize their religion while punishing those that refused to accept it. By exposing them and interfering with their activities, Mikey and his family became the targets of some truly astonishing far-right Christian haters, a large number of whom regularly send their venomous and near-psychotic hate mail to Mikey and Bonnie Weinstein.

The venomous missives collected in Bonnie Weinstein's book all come from self-identifying Christians, mostly extreme conservatives, most of them veterans or currently serving in the military. The letters themselves are steeped in anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and racism, not to mention a rabid loathing of the world around them.

The letter-writers also have an odd tendency to flaunt their ignorance as though it was proof of their spiritual authenticity. Above all they seem to be in a permanent and apoplectic state of war against that vast majority of the world that doesn't share their religious belief system.

Thinking of You All

December 7, 2014

Mr. Weinstein and the Staff of the MRFF,

First a bit about me. I am a senior active duty officer in the U.S. Navy. My rank is (rank withheld) and I currently am the commander of (U.S. naval special operations combat unit designation withheld) at (naval installation name withheld) in (name of state withheld). I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in (year withheld) and am married with (number of children withheld) children. My wife and I worship twice weekly at the local (Protestant denomination withheld) church located off base in (town and state names withheld). My wife and I are both Sunday school teachers there.

I just wanted to express my thanks to all of you for what you do every day to keep our military from being overrun with Christian zealots. I saw it everywhere at Annapolis and even on the football team I played on. And I saw it at every single one of my training assignments after graduation from the academy including when I was in BUD/S at Coronado. I have seen pretty much everything you have publicly reported on at one point or another in my naval career so far. I have seen it when I was deployed every single time. I have deployed (number of deployments withheld) times downrange and have regularly engaged in combat including hand-to-hand. Have been wounded (number of times withheld) times and will probably deploy again in (month withheld) of 2015.

Being a Christian myself hasn’t really mattered to those in my command chain who make it clear that accepting Christ “in the right way” is what the Navy and America wants of its sailors. My “way” of loving Jesus is not their way. Even my wife has felt this pressure from the other spouses. It destroys the brotherhood and sisterhood bonds of our warfighters and it has to be confronted. It is very hard to do so without repercussions. I have tried a few times and have failed. It is complex and dangerous to even try to do the right thing. For those lower in rank than me it is pretty much impossible.

My wife and I watched how disrespectfully Mr. Weinstein was treated during his testimony before the H.A.S.C. We read his written testimony even before the hearing. Totally true. Again, I have personally seen all of this or at least most of this happen. I wish some of those Congressman and Congresswomen had seen what I have seen and experienced. Fundamental Christianity is out of control in our Navy and Marine Corps.

Mr. Weinstein and the Staff of the MRFF, thank you for being the ones to stand up, take the heat and carry the fight for all of us. I know this is not easy and has difficult consequences for all of you. Especially the Weinstein family. I can only imagine how it must feel.

We purchased Mrs. Weinstein’s book about these “consequences” a few weeks ago at Amazon and are hopeful it will get to us soon. I actually bought 2 books. One for my wife and I and one for my own commander, (name and rank withheld), because he really needs to read it more than we do. It’s to be my Xmas gift to him.

Have a happy holiday season and know that you are cared about by many in the Navy and USMC.

v/r

(U.S. Naval Officer’s name, rank, military combat unit and military installation all withheld)
