Military Christian Youth Ministry Tactics Include
Stalking Students on Public School Buses
Monday January 13, 2009
This video, which aired on Fort Riley TV KFRL, Fort Riley's local cable access channel, describes the Spiritual Rangers, a typical youth program similar to those found on most U.S. military installations. These youth programs, many funded by Department of Defense (DoD) contracts, are exclusively Christian and admittedly designed to target and evangelize the "unchurched" among our military youth. No comparable non-Christian youth programs exist for the children of our service men and women who are of other religions or non-religious. Additionally, the DoD job descriptions for civilian military base Religious Education Directors, like Don Ericson in the video, make it clear that these jobs are for Christians only.
The tactics employed by the contracted Christian youth organizations range from luring teenagers with irresistible events and activities that are available only through participation in these Christian programs to infiltrating the public middle and high schools in the communities surrounding 20 military bases, where most children of military personnel attend school. One of these organizations, Youth For Christ Military Youth Ministry (YFCMYM), actually goes as far as formally instructing its potential military youth ministers to follow school buses to assess the number of children and their age groups as a part of gathering information to be used in convincing the military installation chaplain that there is a need on their installation for the chaplain to contract with their organization for the program they are proposing. YFCMYM is a partner organization of Military Community Youth Ministries (MCYM), which, in fiscal year 2007 received $1.5 million in DoD contracts, as well as a substantial additional amount from the general chaplain's fund for events and activities at the installations where they operate.
