Military Officials at Bagram Urge U.S. Soldiers to Evangelize in Afghanistan
US Soldiers in Afghanistan Told to Monday, May 4, 2009 Military officials at Bagram are caught on tape urging US soldiers to evangelize in the Muslim country. A comment on this story from Chris Rodda, I was just coming here to post about this video, but see Jeremy beat me to it. I was just too tired to write about it when Al Jazeera emailed me last night to let me know it was up. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), the organization I work for, has known about the existence of this video since last fall, and the description of it in this month's Harper's Magazine cover story, "Jesus Killed Mohammed: The Crusade for a Christian Military," by Jeff Sharlet, caught the attention of Al Jazeera, leading them to be in contact with MRFF over the last few weeks. This video needed to get out, and now it finally has. But while the copies of the New Testament translated into Pashtun and jaw-dropping video from Bagram may seem like exceptions that prove the rule of American prohibition on proselytizing by the military, they are just the latest episodes in the disturbing rise in influence of Christian conservatives in the United States armed services. New accusations surface against Tuesday, May 5, 2009 By Nicole Neroulias (RNS) A watchdog group that monitors inappropriate proselytizing in the military has renewed calls for a Pentagon probe after a recent Al Jazeera English news segment showed U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan preparing to distribute Bibles printed in the Pashto and Dari languages. American soldiers are shown discussing how to bring their brand of Christianity to the Muslim population of Afghanistan. Through Christian Embassy and similar organizations, millions of dollars annually are dedicated to insuring that our military leadership is steeped in born-again Christianity. The investment has paid off. Ironically, most of those who complain are Christians – just not the right kind.

Naval Maneuvers: Ex-Chaplain Admits He’s Not All He Appeared To Be Friday, April 24, 2009 By Rob Boston Over the past few years, Americans United has sparred with Gordon James Klingenschmitt, a former Navy chaplain with a penchant for Religious Right grandstanding. Klingenschmitt, then still in the service, ran into problems two years ago when he defied orders to use nonsectarian prayers at military events where people from many different faith perspectives would be present. He later sealed his fate by speaking at a Religious Right rally wearing his uniform – a violation of military regulations. THE PULPIT: Ousted speaker

The constitutional violations occurring in our military are so numerous and widespread that we can't possibly find all of them ourselves. MRFF counts on its supporters and volunteers -- the indispensable "eyes and ears" who alert us to everything from the most egregious of constitutional violations to articles we might be interested in. Greetings MRFF supporters!
As you can see, this month's MRFF newsletter is a special "Mayday" edition. The purpose behind this is to make one thing very clear: without your constant donation support, we simply will not be able to continue our fight in the courts and in the media. Please make a fully tax deductible donation today.
The Constitutional Violation Captured on Camera this month is a video that was just released by Al Jazeera, which clearly shows the religious proselytization in the military that we've been vigorously fighting against for years.
We have known about the existence of this video since last year, but it has finally come to light publicly. The chaplain at Bagram says that "as Christians, [they] hunt people for Jesus." As ardent guardians of the Constitution, we at MRFF hunt these people for the good of our noble country.
Between Klingenschmitt's "imprecatory prayer" for the deaths of both myself and Reverend Barry Lynn and the shocking Al Jazeera video that was just uncovered, there can be no more doubt that MRFF's fight is valid, and more important, fundamentally vital.
The relevance of MRFF's fight was featured at length this month in a Harper's Magazine article by Jeff Sharlet. The May 2009 issue is now available on newsstands everywhere.
Finally, our 4th Annual Thomas Jefferson Award Luncheon is this month. If you would like to attend this event in New Mexico on May 29th, please see below in this newsletter for more information.
