Dear Mikey:

Retired Marine LtCol. Keep up the good work. The evangelicals drove me up the wall towards the end.  Thought you’d enjoy this link to what’ goes on down here in Texas. A prayer breakfast at Dallas Baptist University. http://www.txsg.state.tx.us/

Mikey’s Response:
thx SO much, (name withheld)!!………you just made our month!!……..how long were you in?….that prayer breakfast is HEINOUS!!. we may do something on it…. thx for the reachout…best, Mikey Weinstein

Mikey:
Actually (name withheld)  is my wife, I just use this e-mail account. And, for the record, I’m “inactive reserve” and tolerant Catholic, who was in the Corps as an aviator 1977-1998.

Horrified that towards the end of my career the same guys who were always “players” when we went on deployment were now “wanting to see a good turnout at the prayer breakfast,” etc. although they never went to church/religious stuff unless it could affect their fitness report. That and, as our O-6/former Marine enlisted man in Vietnam Episcopalian Navy chaplain said in 1993, his hardest job was keeping the fundamentalist chaplains from prosletyzing. Not to mention when we would have a formation or change of command with all the troops of various/no faith in formation and a fundamentalist chaplain would give the “invocation” (why?)  and close with “in Jesus name we pray.”

Faith should be a private matter.
Keep up the good but thankless work.
(name withheld)
PS:  be thankful you don’t live in Texas
