So yesterday I was at a friends house saying goodbye as two of my oldest high school friends head off to school for the year and one to Japan for an exchange. I have been friends with them for years, been to their house countless times and here’s the crazy thing, we are about as opposite in our religious and political views as it is possible to be and somehow we sustain a relationship…they are basically fundamentalist christian republicans and while occasional heated debates resulted in our circle of friends about religion and Darwin (to take it even further of course you know I’m an EVOLUTIONARY anthropology major while these kids absolutely think the world is 5000 years old and the fossil record “doesn’t exist”) we either pushed those issues under the surface or agreed to disagree. so this brings us to yesterday again while I was saying goodbye they were also saying goodbye to some missionary friends visiting from Mexico, we are all sitting in the back yard and they decide to have a prayer circle, I’m sitting at the edge trying to decide how to gracefully exit when my friends mom says “join us (name withheld) and we will pray for you too.” so unlike the brave soldiers you defend who don’t have the option of saying no sometimes in such situations, I did have the option to say in front of ten people half of whom I have known for five years to say “no thanks” I have never been more appreciative of having such an option until I thought of those who reach out to MRFF for help. I decided to stay and experience their prayers….most of which were very kind and in the spirit of sending us kids off to college safe and watched over. until my name came up (because of course they were also praying FOR me) and something along the lines of “though she may not have found the light of God yet we trust you will guide her down the right path” needless to say, it ended with an “amen” from them and an “Hasta La Vista Baby!” from me.
Keep fighting the fight Mikey.
