“so help me God”

“The Air Force is considering removing the phrase ‘so help me God’ from the oath that every cadet has to take.”

Ummm…I can’t seem to find anything pertaining to any particular God. Can you prove that the statement “so help me God” is associated with a specific religion? I’m not hearing anything like “Christian God” or “Hebrew God” or “Allah God” or “Shiva God” or “Egyptian Ra God” – what is wrong with you people? It exemplifies a benign affiliation.

This is nonsense – I can assure you, most people are not offended by the non denominational word “God”…so what is the problem?

This kind of stuff is so trifling and irrelevant – it has no merit and lacks any foundational credibility. Mind your own business and leave these people alone.

Dear (name withheld),

Mikey has read your email and asked me to respond.

The “so help me God” does not represent a benign affiliation. You are reading into it something is not there.

The oath does not say “so help me Allah”; “so help me Yahweh” or “so help me Ra.”

When Congress passed the law to include “so help me God” in the oath, they only had one God in mind – the Christian God.

But there is a problem with this.

Here is your trifling, irrelevant stuff that has merit and foundational credibility.

The very First Amendment to the Constitution reads:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion …”

Note that the clause is absolute. It allows no law. It is also noteworthy that the clause forbids more than the establishment of religion by the government. It forbids even laws respecting an establishment of religion.

“. . . no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” (Article VI, Section III)

When Congress passed an act in 1962 to include “so help me God” in the oath, they violated the very Constitution that they swore to uphold and it must be removed.

How about you mind you own business and leave us alone to defend the Constitution.

Pastor Joan
