VIDEO – KARK 4 – 25 LRAFB Members Voice Religious Concerns, Leaders React

LITTLE ROCK, AR — Twenty-five members of the Little Rock Air Force Base say an upcoming event promotes a certain religious faith with no alternatives.

The event is called Winter Wingman Day, and it is set for Feb. 7. The goal is to develop members mentally, physically, socially and spiritually.

The members sending the letter say the spiritual component of the classes only represent one version of Christianity, which includes the course called “Art of Marriage.”

So in fear of retribution, they sent a letter to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation for help addressing the issue.

KARK spoke with the founder by phone.

“There are just around 41,000 different denominations and sects of Christianity alone and the 25 members felt they were being forced to accept just one view and this was totally wrong, ” said Foundation founder Mikey Weinstein.

In response, a base spokesperson reacted by saying: “To ensure we are including the needs of all Airmen, we removed the ‘Art of Marriage’ course…the class was replaced by the ‘Marriage Care Communication’ and Intimacy’ classes…which is faith-based, but is inclusive of all faiths and same-sex relationships.”

Weinstein says he is pleased about the decision, but is not happy leaders are trying to blame gay members for the change.

“We are not happy with that excuse, but we got the change made, and it’s something we will be watching very, very closely,” Weinstein said.
