Dear with Sympathy, as far as my thinking apparatus goes, it is working well. I am an educated man with many years of school, life, and work experience under my belt.
1.Kudos to you for standing up to Freedom of religion, but I feel you all stand more for the “Freedom From Religion”. His fit throwing was his turning over the information to the air force academy. There was NO ONE forcing them into Christianity nor proselytizing to them. It was the individual cadets way to give himself motivation, do not take that away from him. This is exactly what your group has managed to do.
2. The Academies’ leadership has never had a problem with this kind of behavior in the past and I’m sure they will not in the future. It is kind of like a kid, the adult catches them doing something, the kid will stop for a little bit, but they will go back to doing what they have been doing. Your group brought it to light, the air force corrected, you go away, life goes back to normal, believe me it is already happening. On the Air Force Academies grounds they have many faiths represented there and have services that are directed to each faith. I have been there I have personally seen it. I have family that attends the air force academy currently and believe me, outside forces messing with the academy is not a good thing. You all are making the cadets scared to say anything that may be judged impartial, unfair, bigoted, racist , sexist, or religious. With the way things are going you will see a massive dropout there since this is the only academy that is bowing down to status quo and popular culture.
3.One thing that I will tell you that you are completely wrong about is that outside of what you believe I believe that everyone has right to worship and believe how ever they want to. If it helps a young man or woman to stay motivated then have at it. They are by no means saying hey worship Buddha or Mohammed or anything else, it is for them PERSONALLY!!!
4. I find it interesting that only the Christian religion is becoming more of a threat these days to hate mongers such as this group that you are representing. Never do I find in the news, “air force cadet forced to remove Koran writing from their white board” nor will I ever. Your group exemplifies the very thing that is wrong with this country, You will tear down the very fabric that has kept this country together, that fabric is faith. To the unbeliever in anything I pity. What is there to look forward to in this life? What is there to be happy about? I am going to live a fruitless, non-meaning existence and give everybody hell while i’m here? I really feel that this kind of existence is dangerous. You live by no code, no morals, and you will answer yes I do, then in turn I will say where did your moral foundation come from? What code do you live by? Thank God (with a Capital “G”) That the Marines are not turning into what our popular culture wants them to be. Ooo rah God, Corp, Country, Semper Fidelis. Enjoy your fruitless life and your non eternal existence, personally I do not care if you think I am narrow minded or not. If people are too chicken to stand up for themselves at an air force academy how in the hell are they going to stand up to the enemy on the battlefield. Oh wait enemy you hurt my feelings I am going to call Weinstein and he is going to tell on you and make you stop. you people make me sick. Sincerely, MSgt. I don’t give a damn. BY THE WAY YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CHRISITIANITY!!!! YOU ARE SUCH A DOUCHE!!!!!!!!!!

HI (name withheld),

WELCOME BACK. I GUESS BUSINESS IS SLOW, HUH?. WELL, LET ME RESPOND IN CAPS, AS APPROPRIATE, BELOW.

Dear with Sympathy, as far as my thinking apparatus goes, it is working well. I am an educated man with many years of school, life, and work experience under my belt.

I’M HAPPY TO LEARN YOU’RE AN EDUCATED MAN AND AM HAPPY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CAUSE.

1.Kudos to you for standing up to Freedom of religion, but I feel you all stand more for the “Freedom From Religion”.

THANK YOU. OF COURSE YOU’RE WELCOME TO ASSUME WHAT YOU CHOOSE, BUT FREEDOM OF AND FREEDOM FROM RELIGION ARE DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE SAME COIN, AS ARE FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND FREEDOM TO NOT SPEAK OR FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND FREEDOM TO NOT THINK.

His fit throwing was his turning over the information to the air force academy.

NO FIT THROWING HERE. BUT GIVEN THE TONE OF YOUR ORIGINAL REMARKS THERE APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN SOME OUT YOUR WAY. GIVING THE INFORMATION TO THE ACADEMY WAS A SERVICE TO THE CADETS WHO WERE INTIMIDATED BY THE OVERTLY CHRISTIAN MEMO FROM A CADET LEADER. THE ACADEMY’S RESPONSE WAS CORRECT.

There was NO ONE forcing them into Christianity nor proselytizing to them.

HAVE YOU BEEN THERE LATELY? WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE PROSELYTIZING THAT GOES ON THERE? I WAS THERE TWO WEEKS AGO AND THERE WAS PLENTY OF IT; WORSE, THERE WERE MANY EXPRESSIONS OF CONCERN BY CADETS WHO ARE INTIMIDATED BY IT AND FEARFUL OF SPEAKING OUT. WHY DO YOU SUPPOSE THAT WOULD BE SO?

It was the individual cadets way to give himself motivation, do not take that away from him. This is exactly what your group has managed to do.

HE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO GIVE HIMSELF MOTIVATION IN ANY WAY HE CHOOSES. AS MR. WEINSTEIN SAID, THE QUOTE WAS FINE, IT JUST DIDN’T BELONG OUTSIDE HIS QUARTERS WHERE EVERYONE WAS EXPECTED TO SEE IT. IT BELONGED INSIDE, WHERE THE MOTIVATION WOULD BE MORE PROPERLY PERSONAL.

2. The Academies’ leadership has never had a problem with this kind of behavior in the past and I’m sure they will not in the future.

I’M SORRY, BUT YOU’RE QUITE WRONG. “THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR” HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME TIME; THE PROBLEM IS IT HAS GOTTEN MUCH WORSE IN RECENT YEARS.

It is kind of like a kid, the adult catches them doing something, the kid will stop for a little bit, but they will go back to doing what they have been doing.

THE ISSUE IS NOT THE ‘KIDS,’ AS YOU CALL THEM. THE ISSUE IS THOSE IN A POSITION OF AUTHORITY.

Your group brought it to light, the air force corrected, you go away, life goes back to normal, believe me it is already happening. On the Air Force Academies grounds they have many faiths represented there and have services that are directed to each faith. I have been there I have personally seen it.

AS HAVE I. AND AS HAVE THE MANY CADETS CURRENTLY THERE AND USAFA GRADS WHO SUPPORT AND ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE WORK OF THE MRFF.

I have family that attends the air force academy currently and believe me, outside forces messing with the academy is not a good thing. You all are making the cadets scared to say anything that may be judged impartial, unfair, bigoted, racist , sexist, or religious.

WE ARE CONCERNED TO THINK THAT THESE FUTURE MILITARY OFFICERS WOULD BE INCLINED TO SAY OR DO ANYTHING THAT WAS “UNFAIR, BIGOTED, RACIST, SEXIST, OR RELIGIOUS” (THE LAST IF IT IS DONE IN A WAY THAT IMPOSES A BELIEF ON HER OR HIS SUBORDINATES). AM I TO ASSUME YOU THINK DOING SO IS A GOOD IDEA?

With the way things are going you will see a massive dropout there since this is the only academy that is bowing down to status quo and popular culture.

THE DROP-OUT IDEA IS FANCIFUL, AS IT THE NOTION OF “BOWING DOWN,” ETC.

3.One thing that I will tell you that you are completely wrong about is that outside of what you believe I believe that everyone has right to worship and believe how ever they want to.

YOU ARE INCORRECT THAT WE ARE WRONG ABOUT IT AS WE AGREE WITH WHAT YOU’VE SAID YOU BELIEVE.

If it helps a young man or woman to stay motivated then have at it. They are by no means saying hey worship Buddha or Mohammed or anything else, it is for them PERSONALLY!!!

WHILE I’M NOT SURE I FOLLOW THE LOGIC OF THE SENTENCE YOU’VE CONSTRUCTED HERE, I QUITE AGREE THAT EVERYONE HAS TO BE ALLOWED HER OR HIS PERSONAL BELIEF SYSTEM. (IF THAT’S WHAT YOU’RE SAYING, WE AGREE.)

4. I find it interesting that only the Christian religion is becoming more of a threat these days to hate mongers such as this group that you are representing. Never do I find in the news, “air force cadet forced to remove Koran writing from their white board” nor will I ever.

YOUR ASSERTIONS HERE ARE INCORRECT, AS YOU’D KNOW IF YOU HAD TROUBLED TO READ OUR MISSION STATEMENT. THE FACT THAT THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION PREDOMINATES IN THIS COUNTRY IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR US, AS THE MRFF’S STAFF AND SUPPORTERS ARE MOSTLY CHRISTIANS THEMSELVES, INCLUDING CLERGY. WHAT IS A PROBLEM IS THE TENDENCY ON THE PART OF SOME MEMBERS OF A FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN SECT TO BELIEVE THEIR MISSION IS TO CONVERT EVERYONE WHO DOESN’T FOLLOW THE STRICTURES OF THEIR PARTICULAR VISION – AND THAT INCLUDES MANY CHRISTIANS – TO THEIR VERY NARROW, AND IN MY VIEW PROFOUNDLY UNCHRISTIAN, WAY OF “BELIEVING.” THE ZEALOTRY OF THIS GROUP IS PROFOUND AND IT BREEDS FEAR THROUGH INTIMIDATION.

Your group exemplifies the very thing that is wrong with this country, You will tear down the very fabric that has kept this country together, that fabric is faith.

AGAIN, YOU ARE INCORRECT. NO ONE ASSOCIATED WITH THE MRFF IS OPPOSED TO FAITH. WE SUPPORT EVERYONE’S FREEDOM OF CHOICE OF BELIEF SYSTEM AND QUARREL WITH NONE AS LONG AS IT IS NOT IMPOSED ON OTHERS. BECAUSE OUR CONCERN IS THE MILITARY AS PART OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT, WE ARE PARTICULARLY FOCUSED ON THE IMPOSITION OF A BELIEF SYSTEM BY THOSE IN POWER ON THEIR SUBORDINATES. THE ASSERTION THAT WE ARE SOMEHOW ANTI-FAITH OR “UNBELIEVERS” IS THE CHARGE THE ZEALOT USES TO UNDERMINE OUR EFFORTS BY CONFUSING THE ISSUE. AND APPARENTLY YOU HAVE FALLEN FOR IT.

To the unbeliever in anything I pity. What is there to look forward to in this life? What is there to be happy about? I am going to live a fruitless, non-meaning existence and give everybody hell while i’m here? I really feel that this kind of existence is dangerous.

FINE. YOU’RE WELCOME TO THIS BELIEF. BUT YOU MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU ASCRIBE THE POSITION YOU’RE DESCRIBING TO THE MRFF.

You live by no code, no morals, and you will answer yes I do, then in turn I will say where did your moral foundation come from?

YOU SEE, YOU ARE HAVING AN ARGUMENT WITH SOMEONE YOU’VE MADE UP, NOT WITH THOSE OF US ASSOCIATED WITH THE MRFF.

What code do you live by?

ARE YOU ASKING ME PERSONALLY? I DON’T THINK SO. I THINK YOU’RE BERATING A STRAW MAN YOU’VE CREATED, OR PERHAPS ONE SOMEONE HAS CREATED FOR YOU. THE MRFF IS MADE UP OF MANY PEOPLE WITH MANY DIFFERENT FAITHS, WALKS OF LIFE AND EXPERIENCES. THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE WITH STRONG BELIEF SYSTEMS AND POWERFUL PERSONAL CODES OF ETHICS WHO DO NOT WANT TO SEE OUR COUNTRY OR OUR MILITARY RUN BY FIRE-BREATHING BIGOTS WHO INSIST THEY KNOW THE ONE AND ONLY TRUTH AND CONDEMN ANYONE WHO THINKS FOR HER OR HIMSELF.

Thank God (with a Capital “G”) That the Marines are not turning into what our popular culture wants them to be. Ooo rah God, Corp, Country, Semper Fidelis.

THANK WHOMEVER YOU LIKE. AS AN EX-MARINE MYSELF, I RECALL NO ONE TELLING ME WHAT I HAD TO BELIEVE WHEN I WAS IN THE CORPS. AND THIS “POPULAR CULTURE” BOGEYMAN YOU CHOOSE TO BLAME IS A CONVENIENT CREATION INVENTED BY SOME WHO HATE AND FEAR PROGRESS.

I’LL LEAVE THIS LAST PARAGRAPH WITHOUT A SPECIFIC RESPONSE TO EACH OF YOUR SAD AND ANGRY ASSERTIONS. I’D JUST ASK YOU TO READ IT OVER AND SEE IF YOU REALLY THINK THIS IS THE KIND OF THINKING AND RELATING ONE SHOULD EXPECT FROM “AN EDUCATED MAN WITH MANY YEARS OF SCHOOL, LIFE, AND WORK EXPERIENCE UNDER (HIS) BELT.”

MIKE FARRELL
(MRFF ADVISORY BOARD)

Dear (name withheld),

First, thanks for using your real name (I presume). I’m a grad and strong supporter of Mikey and the MRFF. Let me take a shot at answering your questions…

1. Yes. Emphatically YES. As a matter of fact, just this year, a Christian service member contacted the MRFF and complained about a commander at a military base that was driving his car on base with a distinctly anti-Christian, antagonistic bumper sticker that many Christians (some working for this commander) thought displayed bias by that officer. The MRFF intervened and contacted the Pentagon who then contacted the base commander who, in accordance with DoD policy, told the commander to remove the bumper sticker or his car would be banned from the base.

Mikey and the MRFF are FOR respect and tolerance for all religious perspectives consistent with DoD policy, AFI1-1 for the Air Force, and the Constitution. The sad fact is that the majority–namely (it appears) fundamentalist Christians, seem to consider the DoD as their own private pond for punting and the members of the military fertile ground on which they can execute the Grand Commission. The officers think, all too often, that their religious view is a necessary and sufficient condition for honorable service–and they can therefore discriminate, based upon religious belief within their organizations. The Constitution, courts, and DoD say otherwise.

Bottom Line: the MRFF and Mikey and their supporters will work tirelessly to make sure that ALL members of the military feel welcome to serve, valued in their commitment to service, and free from discrimination and bias based upon personal beliefs that are NOT mission-related.

Thanks again for your question!
Cheers
A Senior (O-6) Active Duty AF Officer and USAFA Graduate
