Dont Understand your Hatred or Christians and Christianity

Mr. Weinstein
I don’t understand your hatred for christians and christianity. You being a jew should have an understanding of God. What has caused you to deny Him and to hate Him so much.? What gives you the right to hate those who honor Him? Go after those who are lawless .

Response from MRFF Legal Affairs Coorindator Tobanna Barker

Dear (name withheld) –

I am writing in response to your August 17, 2016 email to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (“MRFF”).  You apparently misunderstand the mission and work of MRFF and I hope to shed some light on the subject.

Neither Mikey Weinstein nor anyone else at MRFF hates Christians or Christianity.  To the contrary, we fight to protect the religious freedom of ALL brave men and women in uniform.  In fact, over 96% of our clients are Christians who have suffered religious discrimination and/or persecution.  We not only feel no hatred toward Christians, we fight to defend the right of Christian service members to practice the particular Christian denomination of their choice (Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Baptist, etc.).

We also work tirelessly to protect the religious freedom of non-Christian service members.  The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prohibits any state actor, including the military or any branch thereof, from endorsing one religion over others, or religion over nonreligion.  Our mission is to protect the wall between church and state by ensuring that the mandates of the First Amendment are respected and obeyed by military leaders.

The vast majority of complaints we receive from service members, cadets, and veterans involve unconstitutional acts by military leaders intended to endorse Christianity or otherwise coerce those under their command to convert to Christianity.  While we have no problem with practice of Christianity or the expression of personal Christian beliefs, both the Constitution and DoD regulations forbid this type of endorsement and/or coercion.

We would fight just as hard to prevent such acts performed in the name of any other religion.  However, we simply do not receive complaints of military commanders giving preferable treatment to Jewish service members or forcing those under their command to participate in Wiccan rituals.  We fight the fights that are reported to us by service members suffering from constitutional violations – and the fact remains that those complaints involve that actions of fundamentalist Christians.

I hope you can see that we do “go after those who are lawless.”  Our mission is to protect the constitutional rights of those who sacrifice so much to protect ours.  Military leaders who violate the Constitution and DoD regulations are acting unlawfully – and we go after them.

Blessed be,

Tobanna Barker
