I am a sixty-eight year old retired minister. I grew up as an Air Force military dependent daughter during the Korean and Vietnam wars. My dad was a air traffic control NCO at radar sites all over the world. He was on TDY duty on Monkey Mountain near the DMZ Zone in Vietnam more times than I can remember. Each time we waited for his return on Clark Air Base.
We called leaving military housing daily putting on our Jesus costumes because non-Christians had to act Christians in public military places so my dad would not lose his career. That “passing” happened during all my Dad’s 18 1/2 years in the Air Force. He ended up being put out early for medical reasons that had more to do with not being fundamentalist Christian.
I became a Unitarian minister is response to the Air Force religious bullies in my youth. Here’s the kicker now. My senior housing has military veterans who bully everybody about not being the right kind of Christian. Their veteran status protects them from consequences. I know you can’t help me. But Christian military bullies doing active duty become retired bullying Christian vets in their senior housing. They got away with it for decades and are still doing in in my federally funded senior housing. The only group they do not harass are the retired military vets who are lesbians. They are afraid of them.
When Dad entered the Air Force it was not discovered that he was uncircumsized. In his last year in somebody figured out he wasn’t cut. When he was drummed out he was required by rabid Christian officers to get that done before they separated him from the military. So, as a non-Christian, to get his retirement check he had to have that done in his 40s. I remember repeatedly hearing, “if it was good enough for Abraham it is good enough for you.”
If he did not have the surgery they promised to mess up his retirement for years to come.
If you ever need the perspective of religiously bullied military dependents, feel free to contact me.
