Statement from MRFF Ad. Board Member Gen. John Compere (U.S. Army ret.) re: Trans Ban

It is my desire and privilege to join with countless other retired senior military officers in urging the Department of Defense to continue providing transgender Americans the opportunity to serve in our US Armed Forces and reject the bigoted ban attempt.

Transgender Americans have served and are serving in the military with honor and distinction ( Our diverse and inclusive military previously implemented transgender service without difficulty. To reverse that now serves no legitimate military purpose. It should be noted Transgender troops currently serve in eighteen other civilized countries, including the United Kingdom and Israel.

Medical science informs us gender dysphoria is biological not volitional. It reflects one’s being not choice. The transgendered are our neighbors and not aliens from another planet. They are fellow humans beings morally deserving our acceptance.

The American Psychological Association publicly opposes the transgender discrimination stating that being transgender “does not, by itself, limit the ability of individuals to function well and excel in their work, including in military service”. The American Psychiatric Association publicly opposes the transgender discrimination announcing “All Americans who meet the strenuous requirements and volunteer to serve in the US military should be given the opportunity to do so.”

Provoked by a pernicious president, radicalized religionists who are intolerant and judgmental hurl hypocritical hatred at transgender Americans and obstinately oppose their military service just as they have previously done against African-Americans, Native-Americans, Jewish-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Muslim-Americans, female Americans and homosexual Americans. Fortunately, the categories of human minorities remaining for the self-righteous to hate and harm are declining.

Regressive religious fundamentalists who judge and condemn transgender persons reject the theistic tribute “In God We Trust”, biblical human creation by God in God’s image (Genesis1:27), and God’s biblical judgment authority (Romans 2:1-3). In God they do not trust because they presumptuously preempt God by judging and condemning God’s creations.

Their anti-biblical bigotry makes a malevolent mockery of the second greatest commandment to love one’s neighbors (Mark 12:31, Luke 10:27). Renaissance Philosopher Machiavelli wisely warned that those who cannot avoid being hostile to neighbors are ungrateful to God (“The Exhortation to Penitence”).

Biblical instruction for those who truly believe is not optional but very clear – “Be merciful, just as God is merciful. Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn and you will not be condemned.” (Matthew 7:1-2, Luke 6:36-37).

“Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.” These words poignantly penned long ago by Christian Philosopher Pascal (“Pensees”) certainly apply today to the terrible tyrannical treatment of transgender Americans.
