I’ve been overseas for a little while now and just received your letter in the mail. Seeing your handwritten note left me with a smile I haven’t shaken since. Thank you so much for your personal hand in supporting me as I’ve worked to maintain a separation of church and state in my unit. I would not have been able to make anything close to the progress I made without your support. A couple of things. I will almost certainly choose not to continue my military service after this year, due to personal lifestyle reasons unrelated to my experiences with religious favoritism in the military. While serving my last year, I will likely make some final attempts to address my unit’s religious activities where they cause problems with cohesion and violate the AFI, given I won’t have fear of retribution. Also, because of my work overseas, my income has increased. I’ve decided to dedicate a monthly donation to MRFF, in no small part due to the absolutely incredible support you’ve offered me. I know these donations will be money well spent.

You don’t need me to tell you that you’re a great man. Your longstanding track record of excellent service to your country in military and federal service, and your service to your countrymen with MRFF should earn you plaudits, yet instead you suffer scorn, defamation and very personal attacks and threats. I know you are thick skinned, but I want you to know that I’ll always have your back, because I’ve experienced you doing the hard work of watching mine.
