- An activist for religious liberty rights in the military and a high school student who stood up for church-state separation in Texas were honored by Americans United for Separation of Church and State during a special ceremony Nov. 7.

As Mikey says, speaking truth to power is hard, and most of us never do it except on an extremely low level. For many years I believed that the wall of separation was so obviously necessary and accepted that I never thought I would be called upon to help maintain it. I served three years in the Army and was never approached about my religious practice or lack thereof. So it was with a mixture of surprise and appreciation when I discovered AU, and now seeing AU honor MRFF at just about the time when I became aware of the danger at hand. Hard as it is to speak out against those who deleriously want to be governed by theocracy and those who want a new Christian crusade to subjugate the world, it is also hard to accept my own unpreparedness, inopportunity, and inablity to perform as Barry and Mikey do. I have to be content to support them by paying attention and support their work by donating whatever I can. It is a small thing, but it is something, and by doing this for a time, I may be able to do a little more in the future.
