Mr. Weinstein,
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to speak to ACSC today.  I did not like the atmosphere during the Q & A period, but I will not apologize for my classmates.  I believe those that were most vocal either support prosthelytizing or don’t think it’s happening to the extent you describe.  I have worked in a “hostile” religious environment.  I worked for then-Col Johnny Weida here at Maxwell before he went on to USAFA.  He created a climate that was completely open to all expressions of Christianity and was, at the same time, completely inappropriate.  I observed praise songs at promotion ceremonies, “witnessing” at retirements, and statements regarding the Christian basis for this country.
Just last week I ran into an old acquaintance that had worked with me under Col Weida’s command.  When I expressed my surprise that Col Weida was now Maj Gen Weida, this gentlemen asked me why I seemed shocked.  Before I could answer, he said, “Oh, that’s right, you’re an atheist.”  I said, “That has nothing to do with it, he got promoted despite violating DoD & AF policy.”
I may not agree that we’re facing a national security crisis similar to Al Qaeda, but there is definitely a problem.  When I, as a Christian, ask someone to “tone it down,” I’m immediately branded an atheist or anti-Christian.  Many of the non-vocal students agree with your position that we need to keep our personal views out of the office.  The vehemence shown by some audience members proved your point better than any words you could have spoken.  The minute someone dares challenge the “right” to prosthelytize, all hell breaks loose.
Please continue the fight and I will answer your call for help.  I can assure you that when I am a commander, you will not be able to call one of my subordinates a “client.”
Please feel free to use this email in any promotional manner, but please respect my privacy and do not publish my name.  Contact me anytime with any questions or concerns.
Thanks again,
