Hello from long ago

Mikey,

Harken back to the innocent days of Spring 2003. Three cadets–one of which was your son–zoom down I-25 on a Friday afternoon just in time to start the third inning at Isotopes Park in a skybox. I drove my first super car that weekend, ate my first Buffalo steak, and ascended Sandia Peak on Easter morning–with a Jewish family no less! Casey, Dan, and I had a helluva weekend as you and Bonnie’s guests. It’s a weekend I haven’t forgotten, obviously.

Fast forward 10 years and all three of that crew are long graduated. The fight remains at the alma mater though. Casey and I got to catch up at Dan’s wedding back in May. He filled me in on what you’ve been up to lately. It has since then, stricken me as tragically humorous that of all of the people to be at the forefront of this battle, it is the man who rode to the top of a mountain on Easter with a Methodist and an Episcopalian. Ha! At any rate, I wanted to send you a note, acknowledging how important what you do is to the sane and moderate groups of grads and officers out there. I guess reading the story of Lauren Baas was the last straw for me. I am a Christian, yes, but I do not support the evangelization of our military. Period. I wanted you to hear that from someone in the Christian faith.

What’s worse, I had no idea how prevalent the problem had become. I found this website just a bit ago. http://militarycampusministry.com/MCM/Mission.html The mission and goal statements of the group shocked me. I am seriously afraid of the impact such a mission and goal could have on our institutions if successful. Unbelievable that someone can think that this is in any way constitutional. I ams ure you’ve heard of the group. But if not, here’s another group that threatens to infect our beloved academy.

I hope this note find you and Bonnie well. Though it’s seven years belated, thank you for the hospitality so long ago.

best,
(name, rank and military duty location withheld)
