Dear (name withheld),

California Council of Churches IMPACT is a large Christian organization representing all the mainline Protestant denominations in California. We support MRFF in this request for two reasons.

First, we do believe the military should not be promoting religion, even the one we follow and adore. Second – by putting the Nativity in the middle of otherwise secular holiday scenes, it cheapens the meaning of it all. I have real problems with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus hanging out with Santa and the elves. LOVE Santa – but not as an adjunct to the Nativity.

We support MRFF in simply MOVING the creche to the chapel where its very religious nature – its holiness – can be well appreciated and supported by those to whom it means the world. Christmas is commercialized enough, don’t you think? Having the Nativity dumped into otherwise secular hoopla just makes it less and less clear that for Christians, this IS the reason for the season.

So MRFF is not “removing” the Nativity – it is asking that it be properly given its rightful place NOT on the public grounds but in its religious context, and we totally support that action.

Elizabeth, since you and many of your member churches have a long history of limited support for military service by clergy (actively opposing service as chaplains), it comes as no surprise that you do not know that of which you speak. The entry displays are produced by the various departments (wings, flights, etc.) on base. The chapels are a distinct entity that have as much right to participate in erecting displays as would any other support department (medical, psych, admin). Your understanding of the displays reveals your ignorance of the issue and makes me flash back to my active duty days when I had to deal with uninformed complainers. The beauty of the situation is that secular and sacred can come together to celebrate a holiday period, not that it “cheapens” the holiday.

By the way, you DO NOT represent all of the mainline denominations in California. I do not see a number of historic conservative and evangelical denominations in your listing. Does this mean you do not consider those groups to be mainline such as the Church of the Nazarene, the Southern Baptist Church, and the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod just to name a few?

By the way, do yourself a favor and understand that the origin of St. Nicolas (Santa Claus) is very much based in Christianity and the religious celebration of Christmas. Santa Claus is not simply a secular equivalent to the “3” Wise Men.
