Dear Mr. Weinstein,

My husband, who is currently deployed, has been a solider since 1986, first serving in the Army Reserve, and then becoming an active solider under the Active Guard/Reserve program soon after we were married in 1999. One evening when I was helping him get his uniform ready to start his active duty I looked at his dog tags and noted that under religion it said, “No Pref”. Being a newly exposed to the military life I asked him why his tags said no preference, expecting him to tell me that it was an error. He told me that it was not at all an error but something done purposely as he did not want his religion of Jewish anywhere on his records out of fear of anti-Semitism. Surprised at his answer, I asked him what he meant as I never experienced anything like that being Roman Catholic, raised in a predominately Roman Catholic area and not in the military. He told me that he wanted to make the military his career as an officer and he was afraid of someday if his promotion packet could go before a board and one of the members could be someone who “hated Jews, or was anti-Semitic” and pass him over for that reason alone, destroying his career and dream. To this day, after all these years, he does not disclose to many people whom he works with his religion, because of this fear.

I am glad your organization exists to help keep our current military and future soldiers focused on their true mission of serving our country and preserving religious freedom for ALL, and not promoting one specific religion over another.
