Dear Mikey,
I am a USAFA faculty member with over 20 years of service. During that time, I have attended countless commissioning ceremonies at both service academies and ROTC detachments across the country. During that time, I have never witnessed such an outrageous and disgusting display of the breach of the wall of separation between church and state as I did on Tuesday evening at an official USAFA commissioning ceremony for Cadet Squadron 13. At the conclusion of an otherwise beautiful ceremony honoring the accomplishments of over 20 outstanding cadets, including one of my advisees, the Academy trotted out a crusty old dinosaur, Lt. Gen. (USAF-Ret., thankfully) Fain, USAFA Class of 1963, ostensibly to provide the cadets with a gift from the Association of Graduates but in reality to infect the new Second Lieutenants with some toxic advice that, if followed, will no doubt contribute further to the erosion of good order and discipline within our Air Force. After advising the cadets to “kiss your wives every night,” a shocking insensitivity considering that three of the twenty-three graduates were women, (unless he was expressing his advocacy of same-sex marriage, but only for them and not the males,) he further reminded the cadets that the oath they had just taken obligated them to defend the Constitution against all enemies, “foreign and domestic,” and followed that with an editorial comment that, in the future, those enemies will be far more likely to be domestic. If he is referring to the Christian dominionists whose daily assaults on the Constitution are allowed to continue unchecked by our senior leadership, then I would have to agree. But, by far, the most egregious, disgusting and offensive statement was the suggestion that the graduates should “help return this country to the Christian values it was founded on,” a perverted interpretation of both our nation’s history and current events and, in reality, an appeal to lend support to the ongoing assault on our democratic values and the attempt to replace them with a Christian theocracy. That a retired officer with a distinguished career in both the military and the private sector holds these views is disturbing enough, but the fact that he felt an official commissioning ceremony was an appropriate venue to air those views, and that the Academy leadership permitted him to do so without comment or correction is a demoralizing statement on just how far our Academy, our service and our nation have fallen under the sway of those who would destroy the democratic values our founding fathers established and that we have ALL sworn an oath to protect and defend. Such repeated and egregious insults further convince me that we have “lost the bubble” on both religious diversity and simple respect for human dignity and, honestly, make me wonder why I continue to work so hard to produce educated and responsible officers for our Air Force when my efforts being undermined by careless at best and malicious at worst actions by others across our Academy.

Mikey,
I’d like to thank you, the MRFF, and the faculty member that sent the e-mail [above] for bringing the incident to our attention. I can assure you that the Academy leadership is taking the incident very seriously. As a matter of fact, I just spoke with the Vice Dean of the Faculty about it and he said that as a result of this e-mail and other complaints received that the Vice Commandant (for climate and culture) is meeting soon with the Association of Graduates (AOG) to find out what sort of pre-brief/prep the 50-year-class commissioning ceremony speakers and representatives are given prior to showing up and (in some cases) speaking at these events. Whatever the answer from the AOG, that training will either be created or (if it exists) modified so that what happened below doesn’t happen again. (Of course, it may happen again, but it will be distinctly against instructions from the AOG and therefore some other action can be taken like barring that individual from future events).
As you know, though, the longer term question of how we make real strides to improve the environment for all at USAFA, though, depends upon the use of the chain-of-command to resolve these issues. As a favor to me, please pass the message above to the complainant faculty member. I strongly recommend that they first attempt to resolve issues like this through their chain-of-command. If they don’t feel like they can do this for whatever reason, then I’m available if that faculty member or others would like to talk–you know I’ll do what I can to resolve the problem.
Thanks,
(Senior USAFA Official’s name, rank, title, USAFA unit and dept. withheld)
Thanks–that’s all I was hoping for by bringing this up. You can also pass along that if I had a shred of faith that my chain of command would take these concerns seriously and not use them to further ostracize the “whistle-blowers,” then I would happily use it. Unfortunately, past events suggest that this is not the case. In fact, I don’t even fill out climate surveys anymore because of anecdotal evidence that my immediate supervisor has attempted to identify faculty who left negative comments. Thank God we have the MRFF!

It is too bad that this USAFA faculty member was too ashamed of his/her views to withhold his name from this publication. As a parent of a USAFA Cadet I believe the Cadets should be informed of the “POLITICAL” and “ETHICAL” views of their advisor and be given the opportunity to dismiss them for another advisor who hold values more in line with that of the Cadet’s.
I applaud Lt. Gen. Fain for his service, honor and ethical values. Faculty members with the views expressed in this letter should resign and find employment at liberal institutions more in line with their views. They are disgusting political hacks that do nothing but erode the moral fabric of our country by attempting to bring political correctness to an institution with a rich history of honor and integrity.
It is time that citizens in this country stand up to these bullies and let them know that we stand for God, Country, and Family. We will not persecute them for their beliefs but we will proudly stand and honor ours.
This is truly egregious……..on the part of the person who complained. The United States was founded on the basic goodness of God’s love and provision for people to be free of tyranny of the British and to free to worship their one true God. This is my country, a 3rd generation southern California, and I demand all the naysayers leave America alone to be exactly what God intended. We were doing just dandy until these leftist liberals, Obama and his crony crooks took over. Time to impeach Obama? I will gladly contribute to the cause!
Let me ask this question: a soldier is in battle, on the ground or in the air, it doesn’t matter. He is struck – who is he going to call on, “Ghostbusters”? I imagine the first words from his or her mouth and heart will be “Dear God” or “Mother”. We know who is in control and runs the country!
How shameful that the personnel who made these “executive decisions” were too chicken to give their names, ranks, locations, etc. More of the Obama cronies! Load ’em up and ship ’em out! They need to review what they promised when they joined the military. A bunch of real pantywaists if ever there were……I am embarrassed they call themselves Americans. God’s is in control and His judgment will prevail. “Dear Lord Jesus, protect my beloved country from the increasing number of fools thinking they are leading my America”. Many times a day I pray for my country and ask God to keep her safe from the evil that is prevailing in D.C.
Scripture in Ecclesiastes 10:2 – 3 favorites of mine.
“The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. Even as he walks along the road the fool lacks sense and shows everyone how stupid he is”. NIV
Sharon. You sure are writing with a lot of anger. I would suggest just enjoying the warm California beaches and relaxing. I also suggest you would go back to school (the junior colleges out here aren’t expensive AT ALL. And take a course or two on American history, because the version you learned leaves something to be desired.
And, as a Christian, may I suggest you drop some of that anger toward people you’ve never met, and have no idea what they stand for. The true disciple of Jesus loves his enemies and is kind to those who persecute them. I don’t see much love in what you wrote.
I checked out your quote (unfortunately my Hebrew bible is in a box, because, thanks to the military, I’m moving–again! But the left/right comparison in the bible has NOTHING to do with left/right political issues in the US. It has more to do with many ancient cultures who associated the right (since most humans are right-handed) with cleanliness and the left with evil (since the left hand is considered unclean, because you use the left hand to cleanse yourself after doing your business.) — BTW, I hope you aren’t left handed!
I am so happy you live in America, where you have the freedom to write such drivel. But I, too, live in America, and I have the right to both think and say that you are a sorry example of a Christian, and an even sorrier example of an American.

Sharon… I’m not constitutional scholar, but I like to think that I have a well rounded understanding of the values on which our country was founded. Those values did NOT include an association to your God, or any God for that matter. It’s a place where individuals can follow their given belief system without the fear of persecution, whether it be Christianity, Islam, Atheism, etc. With that, these beliefs have no place in a civil graduation ceremony. For that matter, neither does the outdated concept of an all straight, male military (“kiss your wives every night”).
I was born and raised in a Christian household, and I respect your right to your religious beliefs. With my upbringing, I know that a core principle of Christianity is to treat each individual with respect and kindness. It saddens me to read the vicious commentary that you wrote above. Maybe you need to revisit the tenets of your religion? If your God judges you as you have judged vast swaths of individuals, you will be spending a lot of time in a very warm place. For me, I’ll simply respect each persons rights, be kind to others, not judge, and not force my beliefs on others.

How can the Air Force defend us against domestic enemies? Last I checked we had a little thing called Posse Comitatus.
The person that complained is a coward. Plain and simple. Hiding behind anonymity. A coward that complains about a solid person. How dare you call Gen Fain a crusty dinosaur and then complain about his words regarding Christianity? I have served in the USMC – our motto was God, Country and Family. This is who we are. This is why a lot of our predecessors left Europe. I wish left leaning liberals would leave the ranks of the military. Hey Mr. Anonymous complainer, isn’t there some Bravo Reality show you would be better serving?
This country was founded on Judeo-Christian values in case you didn’t know. The problem with our country today is that we have left those values and have sunken into moral relativism rather than moral absolutes and you are a victim of this. Two suggestionsI have for you, do your due diligence and research our rich Christian heritage or….move to another country…..there are plenty of them from which to choose. :)
Kudos to Lt. General Fain, Class of 1963!!!!
The original post is a disgusting and disturbing scenario. I was recently verbally assaulted, twice, in my own home by a computer repair owner who was heavily proselytizing in the Christian faith. Knowing I am Jewish by birth and not Christian, this man simply carried it to the level of an assault. I see essentially the same thing occurred in the original event posted. I salute the poster for exposing the Christian agenda in this nation and remind everyone that this is NOT A THEOCRACY. It is one thing to say “God and country”, quite another thing to simply rob the rights of others. Worse yet when it is in the form of what is obviously a verbal assault. May we be guided to move toward legislation that honors all yet stops this kind of religious harassment. Ever notice how Christians scream when they think they are being forced to be quiet? But the rest of us don’t have that right? Enough is enoug!
Let me now comment on the true “Christian values”: those consist of lying no matter what to gain converts. This is done by verbal assault, psychological terrorism and simply drowning out the victim. Know what that reminds me of?–Muslim terrorism. Christians do not cut off heads today, but they did a few centuries ago along with stake-burnings. Do not forget your true heritage, Christians, or the truth about your pagan “god” who you call “Jesus”.
The attack by (USAF Academy Professor’s name, title, rank, Academy Faculty Department and all related academic credentials withheld) is pretty much what I would expect from a liberal college professor.
I had the pleasure of doing a roof repair for General Faine in 2017. He was a tough, honest, country and God loving man. I’m sure his comments were only to inspire through God and country. Never disrespect an American hero like himself just because you disagree with his approach.?
