Howdy,

Please find below a copy of a letter I sent to the Air Force Times re the article on removing God from the USAFA’s honor oath. Whether the editor prints the letter is another matter.

Cheers,

Dear Editor,

[Re: “Academy may drop ‘God’ from cadets’ oath,” AF Times, 4 November 2013]

As a non-religious USAF officer, I spent 30 years in uniform having to endure seemingly endless and unwanted religious chatter from wing commanders, chaplains, and other officers and airmen who were overjoyed to “share” the glories of their faith with me. Prayers, proselytizing, and preaching have no place in the modern military. Consequently, references to a deity have no place in the Academy’s honor oath. Thank goodness for true patriots like Mikey Weinstein and his efforts to keep our fine service free from religious influences and intolerance. No doubt Madison, Jefferson, Paine and many other founding thinkers would approve whole-heartedly of Mikey’s efforts to make and keep the Academy a welcoming place for all—as our great Constitution requires. Let us all hope the Academy does the right thing for all airmen—religious and non-religious alike. Fix the oath.

Respectfully,
