DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas, accepted the Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s thanks for its commitment to the religious liberty guarantees established by the United States Constitution, and for safeguarding these rights for the military veteran-patients of the DeBakey Center. Expressing her gratitude, Verbeck stated that the act of displaying the Bible on the POW/MIA table was a needless distraction from the overall purpose of the memorial, which is to honor all veterans irrespective of their chosen faiths (or lack thereof). Verbeck operates directly under the management of DeBakey VA Medical Center Communications Director Maureen Dyman. The DeBakey senior staff’s affirmation of the vital separation of church and state came following concerns over the display that were voiced by 35 veteran MRFF clients, 22 of whom are Christian.
