Actually, the Winter Solstice is the “reason for the season”, combined with the axial tilt of our planet that makes that possible. Virtually every civilization and culture that originated in the northern hemisphere from the semi-tropical regions on north have celebrations around the Winter Solstice, with the cultures further north having more substantial observances.
The original holiday in Rome was Saturnalia. Early christians stole the holiday when they took over the Roman Empire, and could not quash the holiday itself. Many of the other familiar elements of Christmas were stolen from other cultures as well, like the Germanic tribes and Nordic cultures Yule celebrations.
Then again, virtually nothing about the Jesus myth is original. Pretty much everything can be found in other contemporary myths.
Christians can no longer continue to lie about their religion and their holidays. Too many people are no longer afraid of them, and too many people refuse to kowtow to them any more. They are losing the power to control others that they once had, and that means that the world is improving.
