Battle Brewing Between Anti-Religion Activist
and Military Chaplains Using Social Media
to Minister to Service Members
By: Eric Philips

(Excerpts from CBN News/Emphasis Added by MRFF)
A major battle is brewing over how military chaplains are attempting to do their jobs in a pandemic world. Since social distancing guidelines have closed chapels and other meeting places, chaplains like many pastors have moved online to help meet spiritual needs. This has led to complaints about the nature of the posts and where they’re appearing.
CBN News recently spoke with the Chief Chaplain of the US Army about how those in his command have adapted to virtual ministry.

However, even with the increased demand, some posts have been met with resistance and criticism, including one from a chaplain at Ft. Drum.
“This is a great place to just sit down on a bench and to pray and to connect with God,” the chaplain said in the video.
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation says it fought to have it removed from the command’s official social media page. They said it was over the top.
“Some chaplains, over-zealous proselytizers, and in this case they’ve all been fundamentalist Christian chaplains have placed their videos on the commander’s Facebook page, social media, which means it belongs to the installation and that carries with it the imprimatur of endorsement, validation, and approval by the commander,” said MRFF founder, Mikey Weinstein. “You see it’s the Great Commission versus the great Constitution.”
Weinstein claims his organization acted after receiving complaints from service members, many of them Christians, about the posts. A number of the posts have been removed.
“It’s all a matter of time, place, and manner,” Weinstein said.
Weinstein’s feels these messages belong on a chaplain’s individual page, not a command’s official page. Otherwise, he says they violate the Constitution and threaten unit cohesion.

Sen. Cruz Urges Secretary of Defense to Protect Religious Freedom of Military Service Members
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) today sent a letter urging Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to protect religious freedom within the Department of Defense after reports that the Army has censored military chaplains and harmed their ability to provide religious services during the coronavirus pandemic – access that is not only essential for many service members, but also mandated by the Constitution.
In the letter, he wrote:
“As you know, military chaplains play a crucial role tending to the spiritual and moral well-being of America’s service members. […] Unfortunately, DOD and the Army have been hindering chaplains’ efforts to send messages of hope and faith through a series of extremely concerning infringements on military chaplains’ free exercise rights. We write to urge you to ensure that DOD complies with the religious freedom mandates of the Constitution and to ask you to issue clear guidance that strongly protects religious freedom within the DOD. […]
“During this global pandemic, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has been waging a campaign against the chaplaincy, and frankly, against religious freedom in the military generally. In response, the Army has censored chaplains’ religious speech based on the flawed and arbitrary notion that military chaplains may not carry out their official duties outside of a religious ceremony that occurs within the four walls of a chapel.
Urging Secretary Esper to comply with congressional mandates, executive orders, and the Constitution, Sen. Cruz concluded:
“Service members give their lives to defend the principle of religious freedom enshrined in our Constitution, and that principle must be protected within the military. These unlawful infringements must end. We urge you to ensure that DOD implements the religious liberty training program that Congress has mandated. We also urge you to issue clear guidance, in accordance with the Attorney General’s Memorandum on Religious Liberty, regarding the protections afforded to religious expression and how issues concerning religious freedom should be addressed amidst the pandemic.
The full letter can be read here and below.”

Mikey is such a lying sack of pigs entrails. Now he sounds like a prosperity gospel televangelist pleading for money.
Thank God for John Piper. Thank God for Ted Cruz. The culture war on male, conservative/reformed/evangelical fundamentalist Christians is real in the world. This attack is in the Army, and in our culture. God’s love is for all men and women. His love is liberal, to all humans. And yes, It is based on God’s word, the Bible, the actual word of God.
So what is your point Patriot for Christ about Weinstein pleading for money? Everyone needs money. You tried to live without money.
Joshua, what attack on the Army, conservatives, Christians, and on our culture? More likely, it was those groups that were attacking other people under the disguise of “free market”, “free enterprise”, “democracy”, “freedom of religion”, “freedom of speech”, etc., etc, etc?
Ted Cruz is the poster child for entitled male. He took three pages to whine about Christianist’s having to follow the rules. Poor baby!
Joshua –
You said: “The culture war on male, conservative/reformed/evangelical fundamentalist Christians is real in the world.”
What culture war? Are ‘male, conservative/reformed/evangelical fundamentalist Christians’ killed for jogging? Sleeping? Carrying a properly licensed weapon? Playing in a park?
As far as I can tell all We The People want from your ‘male, conservative/reformed/evangelical fundamentalist Christians’ is for them to follow the damn rules you Christianists take so much pleasure in using against those who can’t fight back.
Honestly, y’all have been in control most of my life and all you do is whine. Get a pair (organs to be left to the readers imagination). Do something for someone not in your church or inner circle. Might be liberating. You might even come to like it.
