Weinstein seems to forget that if you are a junior ranking enlisted person, you can’t talk back or stand up to your non-commissioned officer as well if they tried to convert you to Christ because that is insubordination as well and the US military is overloaded with too many sergeants/petty officers/chief petty officers. In addition, if you are a second lieutenant/ensign, you need to rely on your NCOs/chief petty officers for their experience, advice, and guidance; however, if you tried to stop their illegal religious acts that violate the US Constitution, they will leave you high and dry even if you outrank them.

I agree with all of Mikey’s arguments but was disappointed that he didn’t recognize, let alone address a fundamental question. What is the higher purpose of the U.S. military? In the mission statement I read, “military life requires individual adherence to shared patriotic principles”

Without a definition of what that patriotism entails why can’t Christian Nationalism fill in as a guiding principle? One can make the argument all day long that “patriotism” is not the focus of this effort but that doesn’t remove the consequences of decision making (defining it)? Right? What are the consequences of avoiding the patriotism question?

Will soldiers fight for an undefined patriotism? Will they fight for the part of the Constitution that says what not to do?

How could we NOT expect this problem with a vague mission statement?

How can we not expect Christian Nationalism when most who serve come from poor (Christian) States? When income inequality continually weakens the American Dream, cliche as that sounds?

How can this not happen the farther away the American experience of the horrors of Nazism? Or Japanese Imperialism? Or our own crosses to bear ;) If you can’t define American patriotism, explain how it has evolved and where we are now.

The course we’re on is to become a Christian Nationalism run military (agree, scariest observation is it will only takes 10%). There will be WWIII. Everyone will learn AGAIN. Can we avoid that?

If you can direct me to articles on this site that address this question, please let me know. Thanks!

I wouldn’t want Christian Nationalism to fill in as a guiding principle? We have seen what happens when religion or nationalism are used alone as a guiding principle. Combine the two together would make it worse.
