Weinstein , you must be a soulless, hideous,  human being ! Not to mention a major creep.

What pleasure do you derive from bullying people who have different beliefs than you. Hell will be too good for you! There is evil in the world and you are a poster child for evil!

Hey there, little fellow… It seems like you upset about something?… What exactly would that be?…

I see you got your tiny feelings hurt… Somehow I don’t think you did very well on your verbal SATs? Lol!

Dear (name withheld),

I’m a member of the MRFF advisory board and, in that role, occasionally respond to emails such as yours.  I hope you’ll indulge me while I point out a few important pointsthat you either missed or have ignored.

1.  Members of the USMMA cadet/student body and staff are the ones that raised the issue of the painting to the MRFF.  They found that it unnecessarily and (more importantly) unconstitutionally showed favoritism or preference for one relgious perspective over all others–something that is contrary to the Establishment Clause.

2.  Mikey and the MRFF agreed with the complaints of the staff and brought it to the attention of USMMA leadership.  USMMA leadership (the Superintendent) agreed with the complaint and took action.  Mr Weinstein didn’t take the painting down.  He didn’t cover it up.  He pointed out the improper placement of the painting and legitimate leadership agreed.  No bullying by Mr Weinstein or the MRFF occurred–or the USMMA Superintendent.  The chain-of-command (something you must appreciate as a retired Coastie) was employed effectively and appropriately.

3.  Our government and the MRFF, and most citizens, understand the concept of “right time and place.”  For example, you can have a painting of Jesus in your Christian church or home, or even (in some circumstances) in your office, but to place a religious symbol or painting over a government organization is improper because our government is supposed to be unbiased with respect to religion.  The painting in question would be well accepted by all in the USMMA chapel, but not in a location where it looms over cadets facing an honor investigation or where other official duty is conducted.  How would you (as,apparently a Christian) feel if, above an behind your USCG commander at all times when you were facing some sort of disciplinary action, you saw a portrait of the Buddha or a framed copy of the Koran or Talmud?

4.  Is someone who: (a) supports the Constitution and the chain-of-command a “poster child for evil?”  I wouldn’t think so.  On the contrary, I would suggest that evil (as you conceive it) should be just the opposite.

5.  Ad hominem attacks (another way of saying “name calling”) aren’t a great way to make a point. They tend to paint the author as ignorant, rhetorically incompetent, and unable to make a logical argument.

6.  Thank you for your service.

Sincerely,

Marty France, PhD

(name withheld), I appreciate the quick acknowledgement as well.  While this conversation is over, I think you’ll agree that the defense of our individual rights and the Constitution’s principles are issues for which we must all be forever vigilant.

All the best,

For maximum effect and clarity, issues should always be boiled down to their simplest essence. In the case of this particular issue, that essence is this:

You have a constitutional right to worship and believe whatever you want to believe, and the power of government should be used to protect that right, BUT you have no constitutional, legal or moral right to impose your beliefs on others, and exposure to a sectarian expression, like the Jesus/lifeboat painting in a secular space funded by ALL taxpayers, is hijacking the power of government to advance YOUR beliefs at the expense of others’.

You can whine, play the victim and compose the most vulgar (and, frequently, incoherent, ungrammatical and misspelled) threats you want, but it will never and can never change the simple facts of the matter.
