Subject: Supreme Court’s decision to remove transgender military ban injunction
Dear MRFF,
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has a long history of defending the civil rights of all those serving in the U.S. military. It has been a steadfast guardian of proper and equal application of the U.S. constitution within the military ranks.
Therefore, as a retired U.S. military officer, who dedicated my life to protecting our country, and who happens to be transgender, I am writing to the MRFF to express my disgust at the Supreme Court’s decision to remove the injunction on the ban on transgender people in the military.
No final decision has been made on this issue. Therefore, the removal of the injunction while it moves through courts will cause irreparable harm to dedicated public servants who have volunteered to accept the possibly of laying down their lives to protect their fellow citizens.
There is no justification for inflicting these wounds, except pure animus. There has been no evidence provided that proves these soldiers, airman, sailors and guardians have done anything to disrupt good order and discipline. In fact, the evidence indicates the complete opposite is true.
These unsubstantiated arguments of impacts to military readiness and lethality are reminiscent of the same arguments for racial segregation in the military, no gays in the military, and severely limiting women in the military which are now recognized as discriminatory. Therefore, the justification has shifted to transgender being an unacceptable medical condition. However, all trans military warriors are meeting or exceeding all physical, mental and performance standards. My poor eyesight had a greater chance of impacting my combat readiness than my gender dysphoria. Military members who tear their ACL are provided with surgery and rehab, then placed back on duty status.
At its heart, this ban, and the removal of the injunction, is a demonstration of pure hostility towards a select minority of U.S. citizens. It is discrimination in its purest form. Don’t we owe transgender people in the military the same respect and honor we demand of them? All of us are worthy of equal protection under the law. Bigotry should not be a cornerstone of our culture.
This fight is not over. I am reassured by the fact the Military Religious Freedom Foundation will continue to be at the “pointy end of the stick” in the defense of the civil rights of all military members, especially transgender military members.
