Dear Mikey,

Just wanted to say thank you for MRFF’s efforts on behalf of religious freedom for all servicemembers. As a proudly Jewish service academy graduate and retired general officer, I am concerned by the increasing tendency within the military to promote Christianity explicitly and, as a consequence, relegate those of us who are not Christian to a merely tolerated, second-tier status. This, not some perceived slights to Christians, is the true religious discrimination in the military, regardless of whether some leaders choose to recognize it as such. The exclusion of non-Christians, whether overt or subtle and whether intentional or not, is the antithesis of the right to the free exercise of religion guaranteed by the very Constitution we swore to support and defend. It’s really tough to build a team, as every one of the military services says it strives to do, when the message to some members of that team is that they don’t fit in because they are not Christians.

MRFF is doing important work in raising awareness of these issues and taking concrete actions to fix them. Swimming upstream is not easy, and I know that it entails very real personal risk to you and your staff. Thank you for your efforts and your personal sacrifices. Keep up the fight.

I hear the message but I don’t understand what appears to be powerlessness at the flag officer ranks in terms of the secular nature of our military. I’m just not getting it. Divisional, Corps, and Army level commanders can’t stop it? Why?

I’m hoping the retired general officer will elaborate a bit on what appears to be powerlessness at the flag officer level in at least getting-in-the-way of the proselytization of our troops to grow the new Gilead Army.

I understand reluctance at, perhaps, the one star level but division commander level, two star and above? What stops a commander at that level from countering the christianization movement at the expense of all other faiths and non-faith members?

It’s almost like we’re saying flag officers are powerless to stop it, therefore, the MRFF!

Are they powerless to stop it because of decisions of career over service? In other words, combatting it would cost ones’ career? The upstream current is too strong?

What is it? I’m not getting it. What’s the common denominator that prevents senior military leadership from doing the right thing?

In the current environment, I understand. But this era is an anomaly. The christianization of our military didn’t start yesterday.

Hoping the retired general officer will shed some light on it.

I agree, pushing religion in the military is unconstitutional. It also undermines effectiveness as well as good order and discipline. I also want to pickup on what the prior poster mentioned. People on active duty need to stand up against attempts to inject religion into the military. It takes courage, but if people lack courage, they probably wouldn’t be there in the first place. And it can be done professionally so as not to violate regs or decorum.

Damn shame. General Officers “afraid” when it comes to their own careers, the politicians they are.

Leaders of America’s’ bravest. They themselves? Not so much!

Like pretending to be what they advertise in their culture and mottos.

You know, all that “integrity” bullshit you hear from those at the highest military levels. But when it comes time for a demonstration of it – absent without leave!

Admiral Halsey did the right thing but I doubt your going to see many others follow.

Disappointing to know senior military leaders just play one on TV.
