AFTER:
Mr. Weinstein,
I just drove on base here at Travis AFB to check on our Travis Atheist Community sign, as we members are aware that we have been having problems with vandalism to our sign lately. I was very surprised when I arrived, because the situation has changed so drastically! Please see the attachment, which includes two photos (the “before” and “after”) of the incredibly telling change. The Air Force, previous to tonight, provided four large lights that illuminated the nativity scene very brightly. Most of the other signs, including ours and the Jewish Menorah were illuminated with a dim light which utterly paled in comparison to the completely radiant Nativity. Tonight, the Nativity has only one light, and EVERY SINGLE DISPLAY is now illuminated equally.
It is apparent to me that they understand that allowing the Nativity to be illuminated so much more brilliantly is wrong. Mr. Weinstein, they have altered the lighting entirely!! Virtually eliminating the discrimination in brightness that was formally obvious! Please accept my most sincere gratitude for representing us. I never dreamed that we would have so much success, and it heartens me to think that we may possibly be convincing them to do the right, American, Constitutionally-correct thing! If we could simply now convince them to move to the Chapel. I think we will have won a great victory for a just cause!
Very Exuberantly,
(USAF Member/MRFF Client’s name, rank, AFSC, military unit withheld)

I love this pair of pictures. They are a tribute to America’s diversity. Both are beautiful, but the second makes me want to click through and see each of the displays. What makes me happy is to think that soldiers center their moral and spiritual lives in so many ways — and still those core values overlap in the ideals of this country as a place of liberty and justice for all. At the beginning of our country, there was a wide gap between our founding ideals and our founding reality. The high bar of dignity and rights applied in its entirety only to white males. Generation after generation of Americans have fought to extend those rights African slaves, poor landless workers, women, natives and most recently gays have joined the ranks of who counts for the full dignity of citizenship and self-determination. Even somthing like lighting holiday displays tells the story of our multi-generational struggle to bring our reality into line with our founding ideals. It makes me feel proud to be an American.
Valerie: Your post speaks eloquently of our feelings also. Thank you! At the time of such upheaval, it’s good to have a sane voice speaking for us. Thank you.
Every heard of photoshop? Every display has been lit from the beginning. Glad folks are happy that they can now see what has always been there. There were never more than two lights in front of both the Menorah and nativity. Never were four lights just in front of the Nativity. Check closely the differences in exposure contrast in the two pictures. Glad you’re happy though:)
Thank you Mikey, and other people, who are reining in some extremist individuals or groups within the military. I applaud your successes. Again, thank you.
