Please pass along my thanks to the US Military Academy’s leadership and chaplaincy for inviting Gen Boykin to be their guest speaker at their National Prayer Breakfast. For too long, my alma mater (the USAF Academy), has taken heat almost alone for inviting polarizing evangelicals to speak and pray, and using official government e-mail and endorsements from senior leadership to badger active duty military to attend. USAFA’s denials aside, it’s environment of iimplied evangelical endorsement (supported by off-base mega-churchs and fundamentalist nearby organizations) and message that crhistian spiritual “health and strength” is a prerequisite for strong character and honor has monopolized negative service academy media attention. But that’s no longer the case! By publicizing the appearance of arch-islamophobe Boykin, chastised several times over for preaching hatred in uniform at churches while on active duty, USMA has grabbed the standard (a cross?) and marched to the forefront of this contra-Constitutional crusade. Stupidity this profound demands intentionality–and, as a USAFA grad, I’m happy to see USMA surpass (at least for the moment) its fellow service academies. Well done, Army! Well done!
