The photograph, likely taken by a Nazi as a momento of happy times and to proudly show off to his family and friends, illustrates utter dehumanization, beyond even the respect a head hunter and cannibal would give his enemies over dinner. The shear pleasure derived from belittling, harming, and killing another human is psychopathic, the sign of someone lacking any sense of guilt. Those are the killers we do not want our sons to be when they grow up in America and join the military. Yet, those standing proudly in American uniforms before an SS flag deny such a future, turning, instead, into the monsters of the SS, and by choice. If they were coerced and said nothing, then cowardliness is barely a lesser trait for someone entrusted with the honor of protecting our nation and its citizens.
