- The United States is fighting a war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. Albuquerque author Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein and his nonprofit charitable Military Religious Freedom Foundation are fighting a war in the U.S. against what he calls “the Christian Taliban” or Dominion Christianity. Weinstein’s book explains that fight.
- “They’re a small subset of evangelical Christianity but a very dangerous and a very noxious subset and it exists in direct defiance of our Constitution,” he said. “They espouse theocracy over democracy. They want to replace our secular government with a theocratic, hyper-fundamentalist version of what we call ‘weaponized Christianity.’ “
- Weinstein contends that this hyper-fundamentalism may run rampant in the nation’s public schools, police and fire departments, in state legislatures and Congress and in some defense contractors. But he said he most fears these religious extremists in the U.S. military, “which is technologically the most lethal organization ever created by humankind. … At least those (other) organizations, public and private, don’t have nuclear weapons.”
- Michael Weinstein discusses, signs “No Snowflake in an Avalanche” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande NW, and at 6 p.m. April 12 at Collected Works, 202 Galisteo, Santa Fe.
