Dear Mikey,

I am a friend of (Friend’s name and position withheld). She and I both respect your work greatly. (Friend’s name withheld) gave me one of your books, and I read it avidly. She just sent me the Wired article about federal government and military education/training using derogatory information about Islam. I was very concerned about this. I teach an (course name withheld) that tries to present a balanced view of Islam, indicating that radical Islamist elements trying to subvert Islam for political and social purposes certainly do not represent the majority of Muslims. I have taught the course twice, and the response has been very good.

As a response to the Wired article, I imagine you know that a tasker went to all the services. At (place of employment withheld) we are now responding about how we treat Islam in our courses and instructional material and how our instructional material is vetted to make it nonderogatory to any religion. I personally do my utmost in this regard, and I hope we all do.

I just wanted to let you know personally that you are doing good things. Incidentally, my husband and I approach religion ecumenically. While coming originally from Christian backgrounds, we appreciate the best (and not the worst) in religion as a whole.

All best wishes,
(name, e mail address and location withheld)
