The immediate question arises as to why it’s a cross, instead of say a star, or a crescent or an ankh? The obvious answer is because it was conceived from a strictly Xian perspective. Thus it is a Xian symbol. And yet Pres. John Adams, in the Treaty of Tripoli (an official US government document written and signed by a Founder of this nation), specifically stated that “…the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..” President Jefferson referred to the First Amendment as a “wall of separation between church and state”; while Madison, referring to Martin Luther’s proclamation of the ‘two kingdoms (civil and ecclesiastical)” compared it to the “separation between religion and government in the Constitution of the United States”.
