A question for Mr. Weinstein (with a response from Mike Farrell)

Hi, Boy are there a lot of people that are really mad at you. It would be quite funny if it wasn’t so sad. Through all their hateful comments one stood out. They (and lets just pick one, say Rick from Trunews) keep calling you an Atheist Jew. Is that even possible? Would enjoy hearing from you on this.

Stay the course,

The following is a response from MRFF Advisory Board Member,
former U.S. Marine,
& M*A*S*H* television star Mike Farrell

Dear (name withheld),

As you can certainly understand, Mr. Weinstein and the MRFF staff are very busy protecting the religious freedom of the women and men in our military, so I have volunteered to answer some of the flood of incoming mail and emails they are receiving.  I hope you also understand that much of the incoming flak and general tumult that has resulted from the recent press coverage of Mr. Weinstein, Ambassador Wilson and Colonel Willkerson visiting the Pentagon is laced with hysteria.  Their visit has clearly ignited a firestorm of fear among those in the faux-Christian community whose attempts to infiltrate and insinuate their cult-like belief system into the ranks of our armed forces has been exposed, and the ferocious response, largely orchestrated by a couple of affiliated organizations and abetted by sympathetic websites and bloggers, has led to a certain amount of confusion.

Your message suggests that you would find much of what has gone back and forth humorous, “if it wasn’t so sad.”  While I’m unclear what it is you find funny about it, I certainly understand your describing it as “sad.”  I’d go as far as saying it is pathetic that so many who deem themselves Christians can spew such despicable filth at people they don’t know and work they plainly don’t understand in what they claim is a defense of their god or their faith.

While I don’t know who ‘Rick from Trunews’ is or claims to be, and I don’t know what he has said other than what you have identified here, the question you pose in response to alleging that he, or “they,” continue to make about Mr. Weinstein actually begs a couple of questions in response:

1)  Why would one spend the time reading “all their hateful comments,” including those of ‘Rick from Trunews’?

2)  Isn’t the term “Atheist Jew” explicitly anti-Semitic?

3)  Why would one dignify either such a charge or a question asking that its legitimacy be clarified, with a response?

As one who knows and admires Mikey and is well aware of his personal beliefs, I find him to be a man of estimable character.  I hope that satisfies your curiosity.

Mike Farrell

I find myself in good company with Mike Farrell as an admirer of Mikey Weinstein. I appreciate his measured response to an obviously disingenuous email. I’m also encouraged in my own little world of emails and comments, by his willingness to venture into the trenches, to keep working to maintain an intelligent voice in favor of decency and democracy.
