Dear Mr Weinstein,
I’m a retired Navy Christian chaplain with over two decades of uniformed service. I hope you and all at MRFF are well.
I just wanted to send out a short BZ! and “thank you” for all that you’ve done over the years to ensure that the separation of Church and State and the Free Exercise of religious liberties are enjoyed by our men and women in uniformed service.
Your work is especially critical and urgent now, what with the recent assault on religion (and freedom thereof, as the case may be) by right-wing White Christian Nationalists and other proselytizers who create a climate of fear and intimidation among the ranks.
Such fear and intimidation knows no limits; witness the silence of the military chaplain corps in light of the recent immoral and illegal lethal strikes against foreign nationals in international waters, not to mention the slaughter of shipwreck survivors by our nation’s military. If an entire cohort of staff officers can be cowed I shudder to think how many of our junior personnel live and serve in fear. Your mission is more critical now more than ever in helping all who serve our great nation while, at the same time, fearing the retribution of a small but powerful group of right-wing Christian Nationalists in senior positions of authority.
To be sure, in the past, I myself have reached out to your organization when several commands in one of our uniformed service branches were facing intense pressure from an outside, civilian, right-wing Christian proselytizing organization. It was one of the most gut-wrenching periods of my life. Your organization was a helpful resource and helped us successfully navigate the onslaught.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m definitely pro-religion and pro-Christian. However, I took very seriously the religious liberties and sensibilities of all whom I served; I did my utmost to respect those sensibilities and did all that I could to ensure that the religious and spiritual needs of all personnel were met — whether they had religion, or not! Without your work I am confident that the powers that be will work even more tirelessly to trample the freedom of (or from) religion our service members deserve and expect.

How can religious liberties and sensibilities be respected in the chaplain corps without a secular humanist chaplain?
Fucking hogwash.
Particularly given the demographics associated with the rise of the Nones among the younger population. Why? Because religion ain’t doing it anymore. Younger folks are drinking the drink of sanity, called “ cop- on,” and are tired of the go-along-to-get-along bullshit their elders and religion offers.
Kind of like Catholics acknowledging their imprisonment of Galileo and the burning of Bruno at the stake was wrong? All for suggesting that, um, “yeah, I think y’all got it wrong. The earth goes around the sun! Oh, wait a minute. Did I say the earth goes around the sun? What I meant to say was that, clearly, the sun goes around the earth. We see it happening everyday!” Too fucking late – burn them! Get a jump on their fate in the second life! How dare they suggest religious leaders are stupid! How dare they go against God’s word!
Nones have figured out it’s just the same old tired story line that does nothing but empower those telling the story!
Younger folks are saying, “wait a minute. WTF? Over?”
This current era of neo-Christian Nationalism ubiquitous across the military today is nothing but a prop. An easy to see through prop. That’s the good news. It won’t take long for them to weed themselves out. They’re eating themselves as we speak! Remember, no vaccines! Just pray! Get that gene pool whittled down! The other part of the good news? It promotes the rise of the secular!
Yes, thank Zeus for the MRFF. An island of sanity in a sea of idiocracy. But, wouldn’t you think being a member of the chaplaincy for two decades would have brought about some protection for that coveted wall of separation?
