Dear Mrs. [Bonnie] Weinstein:
Please forgive me for writing to you at your business email, but it is the only one I have.
I recently purchased your book To the Far-Right Christian Hater… to read on my Kindle. I managed to read a number of the emails that you have published in your book. However, I could not make it through the chapter in which you published the most hateful and anti-Semitic emails you have received, because it made my stomach turn and my heart break. How awful that you and your husband should be so viciously attacked for defending the Constitution and seeing that the First Amendment guarantee of separation of Church and state be respected in our military, as it should be respected at all levels of our government and its institutions.
I am a gay atheist, and I frequently have my own battles with the self-proclaimed “Christian Right”, especially when I point out the fact that the United States Constitution was written based on the principles of the French Enlightenment and not the Bible. It gets particularly interesting when I show them that the words “Christian”, “God”, and “Jesus” do not appear anywhere in the Constitution (you will probably not be surprised at the number of people who think that the Declaration of Independence is a part of the Constitution, and they often persist in arguing that the Constitution states that we are all “endowed by our Creator” with certain unalienable rights). Thank you for your work, and carry on. You have my sympathies for the all the hatred that you must face on a regular basis. I am no stranger to such hatred, myself. Take solace in knowing that they only hate you because you’re right.
Bon courage,
(name withheld)
