Military Religious Freedom Foundation Commends Long-Overdue U.S. Military Order to Eliminate Anti-Islam Training Materials

Thursday, April 26, 2012

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF: commends and wholeheartedly supports the order given on Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 by General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff.  General Dempsey has ordered that all training and educational materials throughout the military be immediately reviewed to ensure that no anti-Muslim or anti-Islam references or content remain. [1] Our nonprofit civil rights foundation, which currently represents well over 27,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, cadets, midshipmen, and armed forces veteran clients, also represents more than 10% of all Muslim Americans in the armed forces. MRFF has long demanded that the scandalously hateful and bigoted material, which has been allowed to pollute the once-prestigious institutions of higher learning within the U.S. armed forces, be rooted out decisively.

According to reports, this unprecedented review is the result of a belated discovery at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC) in Norfolk, VA.  In the elective class “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism,” officers from all four branches of the military were indoctrinated with vile Islamophobic programs masquerading as “anti-terrorist” education. According to Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. John Kirby, the course contained a PowerPoint slide stating that “the United States is at war with Islam and we ought to just recognize that.” [2] For years, MRFF has sounded urgent alarm bells regarding content taught at the Joint Forces Staff College.  In June 2007, career Islamophobic extremist and shady Lebanese fundamentalist Christian, Brigitte Gabriel, delivered a lecture before the JFSC where she stated that there is no such thing as a “moderate Muslim” and that “America and the West are doomed to failure in this war unless they stand up and identify the real enemy: Islam.” According to reports, this lecture was presented “as part of the school’s Islam elective.” [3]

In February 2008, self-proclaimed “ex-terrorist,” “ex-Muslim,” fundamentalist Christian minstrels Walid Shoebat, Zachariah Anani, and Kamal Saleem were paid $13,000 to speak before the 50th Annual Academy Assembly at the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO on the topic “Dismantling Terrorism: Developing Actionable Solutions for Today’s Plague of Violence.” [4]  At this conference, Walid Shoebat disgustingly stated “We have to kill Islam.” [5]

Like Brigitte Gabriel, these stooges have made a lucrative career for themselves by peddling their over-the-top, pathologically bigoted perspectives on understanding the Muslim and Arab world while selling their own fabricated histories as “reformed” terrorist caricatures. MRFF responded by demanding equal time to counter these frauds, resulting in speaking appearances at USAFA for MRFF Advisory Board Member and Islam Scholar Reza Aslan, MRFF Board member and former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, and MRFF founder and President Mikey Weinstein. [6]

The practical effect of the heinously bigoted curriculum of anti-Muslim hatred which Gen. Dempsey seeks to investigate has been the loss of servicemember lives, limbs, and the squandering of meager strategic gains in such lethal theaters of combat as Afghanistan. In 2012 alone there have been reports of bodies being urinated on by U.S. Marines [7], the proud display of the Nazi Waffen-SS banner by U.S. Marines [8], soldiers posing with corpses [9], and most insultingly, the burning of copies of the Qur’an [10]. In February 2012, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 (VMFA-122), based out of Beaufort, South Carolina, added further fuel to the fire by renaming themselves the Crusaders and emblazoning huge white medieval “kite shields” bearing the red Knights Templar cross on the vertical stabilizers of their multi-million dollar fighter jets. [11] A phrase which literally means “those who take up the cross,” Crusader recalls a history of colonization and campaigns of conquest and plunder spearheaded by European Christian military orders, such as the Knights Templar, under the pretext of religious wars meant to “reclaim” the “Holy Land” from its overwhelmingly Muslim indigenous inhabitants.

It is worth noting that Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik quoted Brigitte Gabriel in his 1,500 page “Manifesto” [12] and emblazoned the Crusader cross on its cover as well as throughout videos supporting his rambling anti-Muslim screed. [13] In fact, Breivik has claimed that his actions are a result of his fighting a crusade against Islam and multiculturalism itself. [14] The U.S. Military must not be allowed to plunge into a fascistic frame of mind steeped in nationalistic Christian supremacy – an ideology shared by such figures as Anders Breivik and Lt. Gen. William G. “Jerry” Boykin.

Make no mistake – this long-overdue review of the appalling anti-Islam materials used to train our servicemen and servicewomen is a proverbial case of closing the barn door long after the animals have left. However, the old adage “better late then never” applies. The No Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the Bill of Rights’ First Amendment have long been denigrated, as is also the case with Clause 3 of Article 6 of the body of our nation’s Constitution, which specifically prohibits any type of ‘religious test’ being used in connection with any government service. Those who allowed for these egregious violations to take place must face stern and swift discipline. By ordering this review, JCS chairman General Martin Dempsey’s statements indicate that within the Department of Defense he is apparently serious about defending American values with words, but it’s yet to be seen as to whether this will be followed, as is rarely the case, with deeds.

The Koren states that followers have the right to lie, and do other things to further their faith. When I hear about Moslems killing people every day and destroying Christian Churches what am I to expect. I could not trust a person that believes in these things. Let the military tell the truth.
