MRFF Responds to Efforts of Five Extreme MAGA Congressmen to Get Ginormous Jesus Painting at Merchant Marine Academy Uncovered

Last month, MRFF, on behalf of seventeen alumni, staff, faculty, and midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a group that has now grown to twenty-six, had a swift victory, with the Academy’s superintendent, Vice Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, making the decision to cover an enormous painting of Jesus in the Academy’s administration building with curtains.
But now five Christian nationalist MAGA congressmen have decided they want the colossal Christian canvas to be uncovered and left uncovered at all times. Four of them have written to Vice Admiral Nunan urging her to “Immediately return the painting to the way it was displayed” and to “Cease all effort to remove or limit displaying of the painting,” and the fifth has written to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, asking him to “act immediately to correct” the covering of the painting.

What a terrible example this “Captain Keane” has set for how not to lead. I do not know how the damage here can be undone, but perhaps a good start would be: “Captain Keane” needs to stand before an assembly of all the senior midshipmen and apologize for asserting that non-Christians need to accept second class status; speak of the importance to sailor and troop readiness of not showing favoritism towards one religion over another; explain why he was 100% wrong to encourage the midshipmen to fight a lawful order; admit he has no free speech right to express an opinion on the job that outrageously, emphatically and thoroughly undermines the efficiency and effectiveness of training at the Merchant Marine Academy; resign his position as Director of Leadership and Ethics; and accept demotion to Ensign.

I would have gone further but I’m a vengeful old one, tired of the shenanigans perpetrated on this country by theocrats addicted to power.
